One of Harry Houdini's most famous illusions was "the metamorphosis." Harry would walk onto a stage with a trunk, a curtain and his wife. He would invite Navy vets to come on stage, handcuff his wife, place her in a bag, tie the bag, then close the trunk, lock it, then tie four ropes around it with real solid "sailor knots." He would then jump on the trunk, lift a curtain slowly up over his head counting to 3, and instantly his wife would be on the trunk, she'd drop the curtain, get the sailors to untie or cut the ropes and unlock the trunk, the bag would jump to its feet, and the sailors would cut the rope at the top of the bag, and peel it down, exposing Harry Houdini, handcuffed and smiling. Pure magic in seconds.

Magic is always impressive when done correctly, and when no one knows the secret to how it was done. This is one of the reasons why great magicians go through great effort keeping secrets, props, and techniques out of the public eye. After all, the second everyone knows the trick, it is no longer magic, just stage work and misdirection.
