Good Friends in Lakewoodland:

As many of you may already be aware, my dear late father (Robert Rice-retired Lakewood Schools Band Director) and I have written many songs over the years, including The American Veterans Last Salute March, as well as band marches for Lakewood's schools, and quite a few songs of faith for area churches. The last song that we collaborated on was "One Shovel Wide" about the amazing Lakewood mother who shoveled a one-shovel-wide pathway up the street for the children. You can see and hear that one here:

My dear friends, Rick and Cindy Benjamin, helped me to record it shortly after Dad's passing, a few weeks back.

If you're looking for a good Fish Fry, combined with some great old down-home acoustic music, why not come down tomorrow (Friday) evening between 4-8 p.m. to the Lakewood Masonic Temple? (lower level-rear entrance) Rick, Cindy, and I will be providing music from 5-6:30 p.m., and yes, we do plan several presentations of "One Shovel Wide".

Now, there was another song that Dad and I recently finished, although in this case, 95% of it was finished by Dad. When Dad wrote music, it went straight from his head to the page. He almost never used a piano. He would even write in the evenings, up in his bedroom in the middle of the night. Such was the case with this song. One morning, not long ago, he came downstairs with this song. Normally, Dad had great difficulty writing lyrics, but in this case, the lyrics came out faster than he could write them down. The tune that Dad wrote was also beautiful. Dad really felt that his inspiration, his vision for all of this, came straight from God. It was, we felt, a heavenly vision. As Dad was (unknown to either of us) rapidly approaching the end of his earthly time, I truly think that it was.

On March 8th, at the 9:45 a.m. service at the Lakewood United Methodist Church, on Summit and Detroit in Lakewood, The church's Gospel Group will be singing the premier presentation of that song, "In Other Worlds To Be". We'd love to see you there. All are cordially welcome to attend.

Back to the banjo...

I thought that I might bump this posting back up to the top, as a reminder that we'll be doing Dad's song this Sunday at church at the 9:45 service.

Hoping to see a good turn out.
