Two Lakewood Trees Hit By Lightning Show the Scars

Last week during the storms, a large oak tree on the corner of Archdale and Riverside got hit
by Lightning. The owner of the house, Ann and Gary Bish, said a very bright flash followed
by a deafening boom rocked their house.
About 5 minutes later another huge flash and boom happened in the front yard of their
neighbor. Going out they could plainly see the tree on Riverside between Archdale, and Fries
had the bark blown off the front of it.
Lightning hits the tree with a temp close to that of the sun, according to scientists. As it
looks for the fastest way to the ground, it travels through the trees vascular system in the
bark, turning sap into steam, and blowing the bark off, or splitting the tree.
It was not till later did they see the damage to their large oak in their back yard, As the
first strike ran down the north side of the tree leaving a massive scare and wood and bark
raised as much as 6 inches.
