Thank you, federal government!

See "Federal government grounds Lakewood's drone after initial flight" at http://www.cleveland.com/lakewood/index.ssf/2014/01/federal_government_grounds_lak.html.

While I'm happy to see that the federal government has curtailed the ability of Mike Summers and his "Big Brothers" to spy on residents, I'm starting to see why "City Hall and Friends" believe that Mike is doing so poorly as our elected mayor that he needs to be replaced with an unelected city manager.

Oh, and for those of you who don't think that residents are under attack from "City Hall and Friends," FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory nails it when she says:

And, another thing, this isn't what Mike said his spy toy would be used for .. now is it ...

[Engineer (Mark)] Papke said that on the bright side, the drone's maiden flight went well. They flew the drone in a local park and were able to take pictures with it.

Wow ... I've had to do a boatload of research on these for agriculture. It's hard to believe they were unaware that they would need to get a certificate of authorization to use one. They'll almost surely get one, but it's one of the first things I came across when looking into rules about using them.

Paul

It was posted here, rules and regulations and that every "government use" has to be cleared
book, recorded and made public.

Craig Lovejoy that has the industrial version of Lakewood's toy, spoke of these things, and just
how much of a "toy" the Lakewood one is.

We have heard Lakewood City Hall tell reason after reason why they NEEDED this and ZERO
held any water at all.

It has become increasingly clear, If you are not a business, you can go screw yourself.

If you are a chain, "WE WILL PAY YOU TO COME HERE."

I never thought I would say it, but I think its out of control. When city hall spends $20,000
a year on spin instead of opening the parks, or backyard trash pickup you have to ask
yourself why?

I think City Hall has good people, but they are quickly get lost in what is important and
who they work for.

I'm not sure which is worse. Either:

(a) City Hall knew they needed a permit but decided to ignore it and hope their new toy was cool enough that the federal government wouldn't notice.

or

(b) City Hall was so clueless they didn't even think they would need a permit or at least have someone check the regulations.

Both are disturbing and show a lack of rational thinking. Either they are hoping they are above drudgerous paperwork and can just ignore it or they don't even know they should be looking for rules.

Matt,

The answer might be, "A and B."
