Curt Brosky To Receive Key To The City On February 8th
Mayor Mike Summers today announced that Curtis M. Brosky will be the recipient of the 2014 Key to the City.  Mr. Brosky will receive this honor at the LakewoodAlive 10th Anniversary celebration on February 8th.

Curt Brosky is President and CEO of LSC Service Corp, Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc., Barton Center Inc. and Barton Center Memorial Foundation.  Curt oversees the Westerly Apartment complex as well as Fedor Manor.  He is also responsible for the non-profit organization which owns the Westerly Apartments and Barton Center, a senior citizens activities center with 750+ members.  The Westerly Apartment complex is beginning a 40 million dollar renovation project which will include major improvements to all three buildings over the next five years.  Curt was instrumental in getting the funding for this project.  This project will be completed using county, state, and federal grants and loans as well as a very creative use of tax credits.

Curt is also extremely active in many community organizations.  He is a long time member of the Lakewood Hospital Board of Trustees,   He is a member and past president of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and was the 2005-2006 Business Person of the Year.  He is also a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club of Lakewood and Rocky River and is on the Lakewood-Rocky River Rotary Foundation board.  Curt has also served on the Cleveland Clinic Board of Trustees, the Cleveland Clinic Western Region Board, Lakewood Alive Board, and is past president of the Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corp, the Gold Coast Condominium Cooperative and the Lakewood Jaycees.

Curt earned an undergraduate degree in 1974 from Pennsylvania State University, where he majored in Finance.  He also attended the MBA program at Penn State from 1974-76.

“We are pleased to honor Curt Brosky for all he has given and continues to give to the Lakewood community,” said Mayor Summers.  “Curt led the effort to secure the 40 million dollars that was needed for the Westerly Apartments renovation project.  These much needed improvements are consistent with Lakewood’s second century view.  In addition to all the ways Curt contributes professionally to Lakewood, he also has an extensive background in community service.  Curt consistently supports almost every community organization in Lakewood.  We are grateful that Curt volunteers his time and talent to so many community organizations“.

The LakewoodAlive 10th anniversary celebration, Loving Lakewood – Alive & Thriving”, will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 7:30-11:00 pm at Lakewood Center North, 14600 Detroit Avenue.  The evening will celebrate 10 years of successful partnership between the City of Lakewood and Lakewood’s economic development organization - helping to make Lakewood one of the region’s most vibrant places to live, work and play. This partnership has led to millions of dollars being invested in downtown Lakewood and the community’s historic housing stock, sustaining Lakewood into its second century.  Tickets for the event are available online at lakewoodalive.com or by contacting LakewoodAlive at info@lakewoodalive.com or 216-521-0655.

So this is the guy responsible for kicking all those seniors out on the street last year? He gets the key for that?

Last year I sent Curt a long list of questions about the new policies at Westerly. I was a upset about the policy changes because I thought the changes would harm the City and the residents. I found nothing to change my mind about that.

However, Curt did not initiate those polices and did a stellar job in trying to mitigate the disruption. He is a good guy who cares about the community and his residents. Criticism of him is misplaced.

The Westerly needed extensive renovation. As I recall the total cost was going to be about $15 million. The only affordable financing was through various government agencies. The financing requirements included strict limits on income that were substantially lower than the previous income limits. Since the Federal Government did not allow any grandfathering for current residents those residents had to find somewhere else to live. No one was happy about it. Curt did his best to find alternative housing for all of those who no longer met the guidelines.

Any anger about the changes should be direct at the Federal Government and then to the board of directors not Curt.

A lot of government programs designed to help people and communities end up doing a lot of damage.
