I know, what does this article have to do with Lakewood?
A warning by the French government to avoid three Cleveland neighborhoods – Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, and Euclid – recently upset the city’s mayor.
“The French government is foolish and doesn’t know what they’re talking about,” Mayor Edward Kelley told the Cleveland Plain Dealer Thursday. “Our crime is down, and it’s one of the safest cities in Ohio based on FBI crime statistics.”
I looked over the French diplomatic site mentioned in the article, but I do not see any reference to Lakewood. They actually say:
Cleveland: The city does not endanger the day but at night is not recommended. Some suburban neighborhoods Northeast are also to be avoided.
So, I'm not sure were Lakewood comes into play.

Translation - To anyone from France currently living in one of our many youth hostels, attending one of our cooking schools, or just bathing in our culture, I suggest you sew a Canadian patch on your rucksack as you travel about our fine city. While we have no issue with you, your country just declared war on us. We want no one hurt, we love everyone, even you.

A quote from Roy's link:

The PD in involved in this somehow. Any chance they get to kick Lakewood they take it, even if the report is corrected. I'm sure it's all one big misunderstanding on someone's part

Sent this morning to the French Ambassador in Washington DC.
Outraged! France Declares War on Lakewood, Ohio
It has come to our attention that Lakewood, Ohio has been placed on a "Do Not Travel To" list generated by the French government. We found this to be both shocking and unfair. Lakewood is a tremendous community and has long been called, "The Paris of Cleveland's Inner Ring Suburbs." We love France.
Is a link to the discussion currently underway by the citizens of Lakewood. We have asked all residents to remain calm while we look into this mistake. After all this could put a huge dent in our tourism business as it is estimated that we get between 1-7 French tourists annually. Most of them are not lost or taking a break from the highway.
Again, we love the French.
Can't we be friends?
