Happy 100th Lincoln Elementary School!

Post by Betsy Voinovich »

My kids haven't been attending Lincoln long, as some of you know, we've been a very happy Grant family for a long time, but when the Discovery program ended at Grant, it was time to check out some other elementary schools, first Emerson and now Lincoln.

Lincoln just finished a full 100th anniversary week, complete with an assembly where the different classes performed dances, saw mystery guests (including Lincoln himself!) and celebrated every decade the school has been in existence. Each floor did a different decades. My students had the 1930's--- the Great Depression, the release of fantastic movies and stars like Judy Garland and Shirley Temple, and the dances and music that went with that decade.

Here is a mural depicting a "hobo camp" of the 1930's with one of the young artists explaining all of the details.

On Wednesday night, Lincoln had a huge open house, inviting teachers, students and parents from the entire hundred years back to walk around the school, say hello, find photos of themselves from back in the day. Council members, council candidates made appearances, along with notable Lakewoodites going back further than I can remember. The librarians in the media center were especially excited about a visit from former Lakewood Library director and Observer founder, Ken Warren.

Here, current 4th grade Lincoln students find members of their class from when they were in Kindergarten. Further down the way, we ran into the famous Mrs. Marshall, former gifted 2/3 teacher, who was checking out photos from her own class. We were gratified to watch her point to student after student who she still is touch with, and hear her describe how well they are doing as adults-- all launched in the right direction starting in second grade.

Current Lakewood students take over the stage in the gym with their own spontaneous celebratory dance.

My father, me, my sons and my grandchild have all gone to Lincoln School.
That puts my father their sometime in the late 20's or early 30's some 83 years ago.
Lincoln will always have a warm place in my heart.
