Summer Meltdown Covered Top To Bottom By YOU!

LakewoodAlive's Summer Meltdown was this past Saturday, and for almost a month we have
been reading "Lakewood Premiere Summer Event," we have been hearing it almost 4 times
an hour on Cleveland's Sound 87.7. We heard that and Ryan Krivosh asking us if we remember the
Around the Corner song. And it is a big title to throw out there and live up to. For years, even
including this year, many Lakewood residents could not even describe what the Summer Meltdown
was or is. Is it a health fair? A road race, a chance to eat from food trucks parked in front of
some of Lakewood's finest eating establishments, a beer garden, a concert of some kind, or
just another reason to go downtown and walk around saying hello to friends and neighbors?
Most didn't know. But is it our "Premiere Event"?
Well, this weekend it took a giant step towards claiming that prize. While it did not have the
sheer numbers of 4th of July, or the Arts Festival, it certainly took major steps in defining
what it is, and that is simply FUN in LAKEWOOD on a HOT SUMMER DAY and that is good
enough for this Observer.
Ken Brand, marketing and event director for LakewoodAlive: Dude, you are totally making
this thing happen, and working your ass off to make it our Premiere Summer Event. Sean
McDermott (President of LakewoodAlive) thank you to you and your board for giving Ken
and Ian Andrews (Director of LakewoodAlive) the support and space to put this together
as they see it. When they came in there was a bunch of stuff in the street on a Saturday,
they have taken that and really started to make this happen. Last week while in Euclid
someone asked me if we were all getting ready for the Meltdown. That is a BRAND
BUILDER, and a community builder.
THANK YOU.
What follows are some of the over 350 photos that have been submitted so far by
Observers through their Photo Blogs (Isn't it time you started one?) or other methods.
We covered it from the first minute to the last note, and all for the love of the city,
the event and the act of sharing with others for their enjoyment. So please take a look,
and tell your friends to check it out. If you live on Facebook, like it and share it. Like
many photo essays it will make it to our Facebook Page for tagging at some point.

It always starts off slow, but gets going quickly. From Craig Lovejoy.

Pillars joined with Eaters of Lakewood for their Annual Watermelon eating contest,
always a favorite on a hot day. This day the prize was tickets to the Wing Walk. Photo by Chris Bindel.

When I got there, Craig Lovejoy was at full height for Low Level Aerial Photography, and
his girlfriend was in the Watermelon Contest! Photo by Jim O'Bryan

Time for a little Zumba! Photo by Kevin Fraley.

Lakewood Outdoor Basketball Committee (LOBC) brought out the hoop. "OK guys here is
the deal, all five of you shoot, whoever makes the shot gets on the front page of the
Lakewood Observer." Answer: "OK, but you can't promise that!" Me: "No, I know the
Observer Editor and her future husband is running today. If I take pictures of them, I
bet I can get it done."

"OK now if you make the shot again, I'll use your name in the article." So does Cortez Smith make it?
How much coverage of this event, well let's look at the races.

Ken Brand watches the start of the Kids' race.

Craig Lovejoy catches the start of the 5K from the air, while...

...Chris Bindel catches it from the ground.

And me from down the street.

While some check out Michael Gill's Water Moose.

Others look for the right person to go through the Water Moose. Here Robin Sweeney from
Cosmic Collectables watches as her daughter runs through it, not realizing, she could be
the next one through, for the "sake of the article."

Jacob Ott finishes first with a time of 16:04 while his friend from LHS and roommate from
Denison College...

Dee Salukombo finishes second, a couple seconds behind. Dee was not running but was
talked into joining and pacing his friend Jacob. As always kids did a great job.

By then it was time for some serious party and Misty Gonzales hit the stage. Photo by Craig Lovejoy.

By 10pm the place was really rocking.

The Burning River Ramblers played their last song.

As friends talked and said goodbyes or made plans to hit one of the clubs. Here Realtor
Tom O'Dougherty, talks with Lakewood Public Library Board Member Scott Kermode, and
Stephen Davis. We were laughing, Tom's son was one of the young men in the "Tom
Sawyer" raft article in the last issue of the Lakewood Observer.
