Pollution from storm and sewer water is a problem that the City is working on with the EPA. The EPA has the power to mandate allowable pollution from our sewer system. The facts are;
1. The City is dealing with 2013 regulations with a 1910 sewer system.
2. Many Lakewood homes have only one outlet that combines storm and sewer water.
3. Homes that have two separate lines draw rain water but can only handle about an inch of
rain an hour. Any additional rain water goes into and overloads the sewer system and
some of it finds it's way into Lake Erie. This is not acceptable by EPA standards.
4. New large businesses are building swales that collect rain water and allow it to soak into
the ground. Giant Eagle and the new McDonald's are just two examples. We can thank
the City for making these swales mandatory, thus stopping some storm water from
reaching the sewers.
5. Many residents, myself included, have disconnected the gutters from the home and allow
the rain water to go on the lawns and gardens. Residents have added rain barrels to
their down spouts to hold water untill it's needed for the gardens or on the lawns. These
are things that you can do easily and cheaply to help the city minimize pollution. Spring is
here, please consider moving your down spouts to allow rain water to end up on your lawn
or garden rather than the driveway.
