How to kill a new tree

Well, this has gotten me so burned, that I had to post it. If you want to see exactly how NOT to plant a tree, here is a perfect example.

If you're thinking about putting a new tree in your yard this year, please take a few moments to look this over. If anyone tells you to do anything I detail in this post, they may be sincere, but they are incorrectly informed.

Sadly, this was done by people who call themselves "professionals". They are not. They violated every recognized standard in the tree and landscape profession.

Caveat emptor.

What is the problem? It would seem to have everything a tree needs.

Ketchup and cigarettes.

Ahhh, the "mulch volcano". Yes, annoying and unhealthy. I saw at the new McDonald's that all of the trees the "landscaper" (sadly, "Palmer Landscaping"! - no relation) installed had mulch almost 2 feet up the trunk. The chipmunks and moles will thank them.

BTW, the trees are in front of the new Drug Mart plaza.
