GMO labeling....

Californians had the chance to require food processors/sellers to disclose whether and to what extent the food that they are offered contained GMOs. Californians rejected this opportunity last Tuesday.
To me, it’s like saying “I don’t care to know how much interest the bank is paying on my savings.” I mean even if you think it’s not that important why wouldn’t you want to know, or permit other people who do care their right to know.
My brother has always said “all that sunshine must make you stupid….”.

I grew up in California and was stunned by the results on prop 37. I knew a lot of money had been pumped into the campaign and I was curious just why people had voted against it, I found it crazy. A friend described her worries like this: "California voter here - the issue was in the wording. The proposition excluded all foreign foods, so stores would have just stocked food from Mexico, China, etc to get around the law - hurting the local farmers. And, it excluded all meat and dairy products, so soymilk would be labeled GE in most cases, while milk with chemicals in it wouldn't have been labeled. Overall, all major papers (conservative and liberal) agreed we needed to vote No and hope for a better written proposition later."
So it seems perhaps the issue was it wasn't worded too well which is rather unfortunate.

Isn't GMO labeling is the type of "burdensome regulation" that burdens the "makers" in our society? It's a job killer....I bet Papa John would agree with me!

Well given that food producers are prohibited by federal law from voluntarily labeling their wares as "GMO free" when they are, I would say that it has nothing at all to do with burdensome regulation and everything to do with the desire of our industrial food system to prevent us from knowing what we are eating. I suppose that's what we should expect when Obama put an ex-Monsanto policy guy in charge of food safety and the ex-governor of Iowa in charge of the Department of Agriculture....
