Thank you for posting this. My fears had been stoked by the weekly police blotters I've been reading for the past few months, but this puts those small blurbs into context.

Crime content is free, so many concentrate on it, and pump it up.
You know, if it bleeds it leads BS.
Here at the Observer, we are not worried about selling anything, or making you nervous.
All crime, needs to be examined over a long period. (Crime is down from 1983)
All in all, compared to Rocky River and Cleveland, Lakewood is doing OK.
Get off those crime ridden sites, get outside, enjoy life.
peace

Check out the "mission statement" for AGS Software, my software company that creates the software for
the papers. "Get people information they need, then off their asses and back into the real world to live..."
I would also like to point out, and I am not 100% sure. But I believe many of these crime numbers, especially
car theft, rape, breaking and entering were much lower when Lakewoodites were allowed to keep chickens.
Just saying...

I also note that since 2008 (when a certain breed of dog was banned) the number of animal bite investigatons has increased by 33%. Are other species and breeds taking up the slack?!?

So, if say, your son was assaulted but it was files as a disturbance that may skew the numbers? I also notice that the numbers are all up from 2009...just an observation

Good observation. Many crimes are downgraded or plead down. Also many crimes never make the list. I
had the opportunity to speak with a police officer from another city who explained how numbers are not
always what they seem.
It is interesting that since two of our major politicians ran on "I am tough on crime" in 2008 that numbers are
up. Of course one fled, and the other seems more concerned with other issues. I see safety as a "green"
issue, and probably the most green issue in a city.

Taking another look through the report, I found it interesting that it did not include a Ward-by-Ward breakdown. I'm sure the data can be easily massaged to produce such a report. Perhaps each Ward council(wo)man gets a report from Chief Malley on his/her Ward ... but it would be great to have this included in the aforementioned report for Our City's Citizenry to digest.
