The “Best Threads of 2011” Contest

There were some remarkably awesome threads this year. We might as well have fun and celebrate them. It's not too late for anyone to jump in with nominations to the list of "The Best Threads of 2011". The top ten threads will be read aloud by Steve Davis, in their entirety, from the bandstand at the Burning Monkey Festival.

I’ll start.

I nominate “Is the City Losing the Fight Against Graffiti?” because this thread resulted in City Hall temporarily removing graffiti from the Kauffman Park Playground. See http://www.lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10433.

2011 is not over yet! So, there is still time to start a thread for consideration in the list of "The Best Threads of 2011."

The “Chickens Legal In Lakewood...” thread should be among the best nominees for so many reasons. See http://www.lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10552.

A personal favorite, "Prayers and Thoughts With The Markling Family Today." See http://www.lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10461.

Thanks, Lakewood!

The Observation Deck was started because Lakewoodites needed a place to talk honestly
and openly about Lakewood. Far to often mainstream media had not only gotten things
terribly wrong, but served other interests besides that of the residents and businesses of
Lakewood. We found out that getting news was not the problem, the problem was how to
sort fact from fiction and get results that benefited those that live here.

After all we learned first hand, “The most esteemed journalists are precisely the most servile. For it is by making themselves useful to the powerful that they gain access to the ‘best’ sources.” Walter Karp. Sadly this continues to today. The only ones with true access
to information are nothing more than the waterboys for those in control. Ask a tough question
and many fear the loss of their jobs, and after years of unemployment telling the truth
cannot be risked at the gamble of losing another job!

For those reasons I pick the following thread, and its sister thread.

Crime In Lakewood - Are We Bringing It On Ourselves?

Where in private email I took so much heat for so many different reasons it borders on
insane. I was accused of being a racist because the person I showed was black. Never
mind he was the guy with the gun being arrested. I was a racist! I was accused of lashing
out at schools because for some reason I hate Lakewood Schools. Nothing could be farther
from the truth,

But then, the Deck kicked in an very quickly we saw this...

School Board notes: Patterson in, ABLE program moved?

This photo was taken, as we responded to the call of a armed robbery at Emerson. Please
note the children in the background. The robbery took place less than 50' from the playground.

Very quickly behind the scenes the School Board realized they had made a huge mistake.
Putting known felons into a grade school, simply to make a couple dollars. Changes were
made and the Deck and those participating were given full credit behind the scenes for
making it happen.

No one will every realize just how ugly this whole thing was, or how ill-conceived the entire
concept was. But it was rectified quickly, and according to our sources. ABLE is in a much
better place to serve its students, and parents do not have to worry about their 3 graders
getting hit by a stray bullet from some thug taking a cigarette break 50' from where the
kids play.

Everywhere the Observer has landed it has caused great and very positive changes to the
communities it is in. For that reason this is my favorite thread.
