The borders of Eastern European nations have been haphazardly or arbitrarily reassigned many times over the last 110 years. Let alone the last 1000. And there is a great deal of admixture and amalgamation within them. Ukraine had been in something of a civil war for the last 10 years, if not longer. The United States continually sought to gin that up, rather than resolve it diplomatically, or at least, do nothing. This had no strategic benefit to the United States, but merely was individuals of the neocon ilk creating conflict so that they could progress through leadership positions in their individual careers.
