I wasn't trying to be snippy, and some of my best friends are Republicans. Many others are Democrats afraid to speak up, because they are outside the democratic norm.

I have had many mothers(10+) both parties I believe, I rarely ask, that are glad this topic is up, because they are uncomfortable with the ruling.

I was just underlining why some might be confused over what bathrooms are for.

Are you saying that all transgender women are just perverted men? If so, that puts you pretty far outside the mainstream, right there with with those who think homosexuality can be cured by a 5 week torture camp. Am I a man to you? A "female impersonator"?

Are the people who are concerned about this worried about actual transgender people, or sickos who may pose as us? Better question - have they ever even met an actual transgender person? Or are we all just this big scary "other" that only exists in places like New York or San Franscisco? Because I assure you, there are plenty of us here in town already, you just haven't cared until conservatives lost big time on marriage equality and had to find another target. Is the objection solely over the guidelines for schools or is it the rallying cry of people who hate that we even exist and want us to "learn our place?" Historically, that hasn't gone well. The world is far from perfect but it's getting better.

There was a time, back before 1964, when people shuddered at the thought of sharing facilities with a person of another race. And as the world progressed, it became something people didn't talk about in "polite society," because it would expose them for what they were. And that's where we are now. A reuters poll was just released, and the most encouraging aspect of it was the demographic cross-tabs: by far, the most opposition to trans inclusion was in the over-60 demographic. The under 30 crowd supported us by an over 2 to 1 margin. I think we are very much where the gay rights movement was 10 years ago. It's going to be a tumultous decade for trans rights to be sure but I know equality will win in the end.

This is not a Civil Rights issue. Nobody is being denied equal access to to public accommodations. Believing that you have the wrong body, does not entitle you to use the wrong restroom. I don't think that MLK marched so little boys could use the little girls room. Common sense tells me that allowing boys or men to enter women's bathrooms, locker rooms or changing rooms is not a good thing.

It's not the wrong restroom. Trans women are women. I'd get a heck of a lot more odd looks if I strolled into the men's room, which I haven't in years. The vast majority of corporations already have anti-discrimination policies in place, and they aren't going away anytime soon. Poor Target gets all the protests, but the fact is that Walmart, McDonalds, Starbucks, and thousands of other companies already have these same rules, they just don't publicize them.

Bible belt states will probably pass bans in the coming years, though. My concern is for trans people who live in the South, and trans students nationwide who are not afforded the same dignity that adults are.

It is very much a civil rights issue and these things don't go backward, at least in the long run. Within a decade anti-discrimination policies will be settled law.
