McDonald's replied to my inquiry about helping with funeral expenses. What surprised me was an individual response from them.
Thank you for your e-mail.
McDonald's franchise owner of the Lakewood restaurant, Ken McCoy, said he is deeply shocked and saddened by the incident at his restaurant and his thoughts and prayers are with Robert Joslin's family and friends. Robert worked at his restaurant for the past year. Ken said Robert was a valuable contributor and will be greatly missed.
Right now, Ken is providing support and assistance for Robert's family and his coworkers during this terribly difficult time including contributions to the funeral expenses.
Out of respect for Robert, the restaurant on Sloane Avenue will be closed during the funeral so that the restaurant employees can attend the service.
The restaurant is cooperating fully with the police on this ongoing investigation. Again, thank you for your e-mail and for your concern for Robert Joslin and his family.

McDonald's Customer Response Center
I had never thought to get an individual response from such a mega-corporation. I hope that the help is there, as indicated. If it is, nicely done, McDonalds.

While the response is nice, McD's corporate has not said a word about the incident, nor has indicated they are going to do anything.
Very sad for a corporation who claims to be a 'part of the community'.

Hey Phil, funny thing is...I got a response as well and it said the same exact thing as yours did.

I had a feeling it was going to be a 'canned' response.

I also got the same response. Gotta loves those form letters.

Unless I am mistaken, I am under the impression that some of these types of restaurants are "corporately owned" and some, like Mr. McCoy's, are privately owned through franchises.
If this is true in this case, then it would stand to reason that the franchised private business would handle the bulk of it's own decisions regarding these matters.

Even if it is a franchise, the McD's name is still tied to it. It's sad that McD's corporate has not come forward with a public response of any kind.

I'm surprised anyone got a response at all. The fact that the text is the same in all the emails isn't surprising nor disappointing - I'm sure the tone and content of all of our comments were similar enough to be addressed with a single response. That doesn't make it a canned form letter - somebody clearly still had to take the time to draft this specifically for this situation.

i didn't get that response, but it would make me mad if I did.
just like david said, they didn't mention anything about helping other than closing the restaurant down.
does anyone know how much support they've gotten, and if they still have a lot to pay?

For the record, I got the identical response.

I hope someone will eventually find out if they did assist at all but I am with Brian, the fact that they were canned means little compared to the fact that they responded at all. If one has ever made a comment by letter or e-mail to a giant corporation, you come to realize that maybe someone is reading it but you will never know because other than a "we received your comment" canned e-mail, you get nothing else. The fact that they took the time to address this with specific information was nice to know.
I am sure at some point we will hear if any assistance was actually given other than closing the store so co-workers could all attend a funeral.

McDonald's gave the family $3,000 for funeral expenses.

Was this the franchisee or McD's corporate who gave the $3,000?
