I have to ask, since my company is 501c3 and my address is my home, does that mean I can't put a sign out in my front yard? It would be a personal sign, not a business sign, but would that be a conflict? NOT that I have a sign in my yard, my dogs would destroy it chasing the squirrels and the chipmunks.
Missy, I don't know the answer to that question, but it's a very good one. If you had a lawyer help you set up your 501c3, I'd start by asking that person that question, but he or she may not have the answer, either.

Perhaps the ACLU is the group to call and ask, since they are often the group making challenges regarding 501c3s endorsing, or appearing to endorse, candidates.

It would be very unlikely that a challenge to your 501c3 would be made, because you aren't visible in the same way that a church is visible, for instance, but with all the other interesting things that have happened to you, I would suggest that being careful would be a good choice.

Now you know why I play the banjo...

Now, let's sing.
Gary,

I'm not known for my dulcet tones, but I'll sing with you. I might even frail MY banjo, or fingerpick my guitar along with you.

Unfortunately, like the proverbial tree falling in the forest, a lot of these people can't hear our community "music", hence, it just hasn't happened for them.

I know your banjo "machine" surrounds hate, but how is it at corralling misplaced anger and aggression?

Stephen,

Who are "these people"?

At least you admit that if you are not in your little group you are on the outside.

Is this a community paper or not? I didn't realize we had to pick sides.

First let me be clear that I am a registered Democrat and yes I am voting for Obama, but Colleen makes a good point about the sign hanging in the window. Since the LO does NOT endorse candidates one of the signs should come down. I know that the window belongs to another office that is NOT an LO office, and I doubt there was any intent or conspiracy on anyone’s part. Colleen’s question would have been asked by someone from the other side if there had been a McCain sign in the window. Call it a learning curve Jim.

Ryan

You must learn to read.

I made it clear to Colleen, that the sign my wife's and not mine. I then made it clear to you that the sign was my wife's and not mine.

Yet you continued to attack her, and her sign.

Mine will be going up shortly.

Core group?

Ryan,

Ryan Salo wrote:At least you admit that if you are not in your little group you are on the outside.
I admit that, other than being a Lakewood resident, I am not in a group, other than my family.

Ryan Salo wrote:Who are "these people"?
I see some of "these people" as a "little group", or groups, that act selfishly and polarize the Lakewood community.

Ryan Salo wrote:Is this a community paper or not? I didn't realize we had to pick sides.
I DO happen to know something about the mission of the Lakewood Observer project and paper. From the onset, it had nothing to do with picking sides. It was all about building community through the free transmission of ideas.

I admit that the mission was a little idealistic because it never really planned for the disinformation, innuendo, anger, hate, and false equivalencies presented by "these people".

"These people" demand picking sides, AND want to censor those that are not in their "little group".

Because of the Lakewood Observer project, at least YOU get to have your say here. Jim O'Bryan should have the same privilege after creating this communication tool.

Outside of here, I think you should give Jim, and his wife, the same opportunity to express themselves with signs, or whatever, just as you did with your t-shirt in the 4th of July parade.

My husband told me about it to me previously, I looked up (at a no turn on red stop light) and thought it looked odd. I still think it looks odd. But at least now I know it is intentional and I can tell my husband he was right and I was wrong. It is our 14th Anniversary today and he will love that.
Wow, Thats all it take is to drive past the LO office and look up!

How about a sign of a banjo and a cold beer? If we were sitting in the airport, I’d add a shot for 2 bucks. :)

Maybe it was the ET visitation that Eisel's been hyping up for weeks.

No, it was clearly something that happened before 2:04 P.M. yesterday.

What did that feel like?

I do not really want to get in on this. It is all kind of silly. But I can not help it. Let's say I really liked the LO and Obama. And I put both signs in front of my house. As a private citizen I am pretty sure I can do that. Did I miss something or is that the same thing that is happening here. Sounds to me like the Observer offices are on the 3rd floor and AGS offices are on the 2nd floor. I read it as the private owner of AGS putting up two signs that they like.

Personally I think newspaper editorial endorsements are worthless. Was it 2000 or 2004 when the PD publisher overrode his editorial board to insist on endorsing Bush...? It's kind of argument from authority, one of my favourite fallacies.

LO seems pretty balanced to me I would say.

Charlie

A shot for $2 at an airport!

Where is that?

Now it is all settled, the Observer will be banned from the second floor until November 5th.

After all how could my wife, president of AGS pass this up?

Katherine,
My friend Deb O'Bryan, cc'd here, has a central Lakewood location with prime window space at the corner of Warren and Detroit. She is now willing to put up 3 large window signs (similar to that you've got at the Lakewood HQ or the mural in the 2nd floor). Do we still have big signs, banner, poster, etc. for her to hang? Good reinforcement in the heart of Lakewood.

Tom

You think I am the feisty one!

Now you will see how the gal that keeps me in line plays!

She wants to do a story for the paper on her loss of free speech and how she is willing to stand up to those that try to keep women down and from speaking their minds. Or as she put it. They finally gave us the right to vote, now it is time to kick it up a notch.

A Super Large Obama sign in all the windows of a PRIVATE BUSSINESS. I love it.

Kudos to you wife. That is how everybody should roll.
