This is my point.
I agree that some parents don't encourage things like "practice makes perfect," self-discipline, the joy of getting good at something. Thats an important role of raising a child.
By the same token, I dont see the value of fighting a kid who doesnt like competitve sports. For some kids, "practice makes perfect" might be playing the piano as opposed to making a layup.
All kids need to be active, but forcing a child into anything rarely works. And I would rather my kids walk, swim, or ride bikes non-competitively that stay plugged into their XBox.

Whether an individual school does ribbons, or "fun days", or maybe something in between ("Fitness Celebrations"?), is of less concern to me than having the importance of lifelong physical activity being stressed to them.

Some kids can live healthy and satisfied lives without ever competing in a single "structured sporting event".
Finally as for Horace Mann the point is moot since the school is closing as a middle school next week. Im presuming that the HM principal is going to go to the new Garfield school. Is that right?
