The public comment Tuesday evening was nothing less than an exceptional testament to the importance and value of engaged citizens' input.Kate McCarthy wrote:I was beyond impressed by the public comments made in last night's council meeting regarding the proposed dog legislation.
As I recall, every speaker was formally thanked by Council's president. Upon reflection, I believe all the same that more specific thanks are entirely in order.
Members of the public who spoke on this issue last night were true public servants, volunteering their time to share important information with paid government officials who made a conscious choice to draft legislation without consulting a single one of these citizens, who have in most cases long since proved themselves as both concerned and informed.
I'm glad that we now at least have multiple exceptions on city council, who have proactively engaged the input of citizen activists. I genuinely believe they will provide an example, in the present if anyone is receptive to it, and otherwise in the future.
