The Observation Deck

I'll set up a forward base at Crazy George's Gyros (W.95 and Madison). It's 24 hour a day operation makes it uniquely qualified for 'round the clock reconnaisance. Victuals, especially the fried potatoes with the two ton omemlette are available. And, while not up to the standards of Lakewood Emergency Medical Care, a fire house is located across the street for band aids and such.

In fact, if we secured that fire house and Cleveland Lumber we would be in command of all government and commerce this side of W. 65th.

Last time I went past there some guy was trying to buy two rocks, and I don't think they were the kind of rocks used in garden decoration. At least I didn't witness a murder.

I see your almost 6 months living in Lakewood brought all the manners of a true lad from East Cleveland.

Allowing others to define our community is a slippery slope.

Look what happens every time we allow outsiders to tell us what we are, and what we need. We end up with scores of refrigerator sized AT&T Lightspeed boxes in our front yards. We have ugly big box Walgreen stores that block our views. We have an interstate highway cutting right through our city to benefit development to the west. We allow outsiders to name our streets and ruin our signage color palette.

Next thing you know, some guy from Bedford will be telling us who we should elect as mayor.

ah the warm welcome of the Lakewood Observer. What is the point of this board again? To create a positive impression of the city or to remind anyone that hasn't been here for 30 years that they're not very important. How progressive.

Let me explain two things. One Steve Gross and I have much history. He was at all of the original Lakewood Observer meetings, and is like family to Steve Davis, Ken Warren, Tom Bullock and others.

Now you please reread Mr. Gross' comments. Then yours.

I had the pleasure, and I do mean pleasure of spending much time with Steve and his fiance Tara. Tara actually wrote for the Observer for a while and was/is a valued members of the Observer family. During our walks (comments can be reviewed by both of us in "Walkable City") it occurred to me that some people might never get it. They might always look for the negative. The day we walked Scenic Park District which he still calls "The Westend" he kept commenting it was not a walkable city. One reason was he would have to take a bus to Case Western where he worked at the time as an assistant!

Since then he moved in with Tara, I believe they are about to get married, on the Gold Coast. What was strange is Tara and Steve have similar backgrounds, Tara fell in love with the city. Steve never seemed at ease with it. He would say, "Only one grocery store..." I would point out that their are 5 grocery stores, and on and on.

I know you will find this amazing, but Steve wanted to change Lakewood to his vision before he even moved here. He would like Lakewood to be very much like ________. Like you want it to be like Westlake. I always have the same question. Why?

Please do not take the exchange too hard, I am sure Steve didn't.

Sorry you got caught up in Observer fun.

But it does underline exactly what I have been saying from day one. We have 49,500 people that are contented. We have 460 trying to make nice little improvements as they know and understand how nice it is and how fragile it is. Then we have a bunch of newbies that arrived here to save us from ourselves, with little background or knowledge as to what we have. All I ask is understand the city before bringing in the bulldozers.

PS - Considering my family goes back in Lakewood's history to the turn of the century I must be an anomaly then. I would guess that it is farther than a lot of members of the deck - anyone else have great grandparents (or earlier) from here? What constitutes long-time residents v. transplant/wash ashores?

For the record Shawn goes back, and we share friends from decades ago. Much like another Lakewood powerhouse Jay Foran he left and returned. I believe

I think DL Meckes family might have us beat, they go back far enough that hundreds now live on some of the family's property.

Ken Warren believes anyone arriving in Lakewood(notice not the Wood) less that 25 years ago is a wash-a-shore.

Myself being of the Irish decent Deneen likes to make fun of in other threads, we are back three generations, with at one time 4 lots in a row ala depression living together.

But I really think it is more like a state of mind.

Now go back to reading or studying or anything you were doing before the "idiot o'bryan alarm" went off.
