Steve, I think what you are saying is "It's the Modality, Stupid". I am hearing you.

Sin may be worthy of discussion. Even if one's personal view is completely potted, it may be entered into a discussion.

No one complained of a "christian discussion erupting". No questions were asked... only demands stated. (again.. based on composite reports by a range of ages).

The school room is appropriate but, at the same time, there is 'content' that parents would not endorse being taught in a school room because: the content itself is forbidden to be discussed there; or, the school room isn't the 'best' place. Of course, parents would want to know when teachers cross certain lines.

Appropriate for an outside group to barge into the room out of program? If I or one of the other "senior" skaters started preaching to kids, a discussion would in fact occur. In the school room, a teacher raising issues as a professional is far more actionable and discuss-able. Actions are weighed with accountability. An existing relationship creates context. Discussion and debate are learning tools. I see no problem with a "rogue" teacher bringing in new and even contentious information.

(Reminding me of the move in Ohio to turn biology classes into biology + religion classes.)

State mandated contention is another story.

From what has been reported to me through adults and skaters is that this group has made more than one trip to the skatepark but it was the most recent one where they actually entered the park with the preeminent message that skateboarding is a sin and that they were praying for people that were skaters. As far as I know, they were not addressing non-skaters. Their focus on the thursday visit was to confront skaters of all ages. In a previous visit, they wore all black, blasted some heavy metal music from speakers and held mock fighting and drinking skits. This was followed by "a minister guy" that came up to each one and "said a bunch of stuff" and then proceeded to remove the black clothing to reveal a pure white garb underneath. It was these white-clad teenagers and young adults that returned a day later to confront the skaters.

I'd really like to know what the skateboarders experienced and thought and how they navigated the situ.

Anyone who thinks skating is a sin is a kook to begin with. Like hearing a white supremacist. You just feel pity. Every kid I talked to can't wait to see them pop up again - pure entertainment.

One side note - years of street skating has put us in contact with some crazy street-types. Most kids I know can tell great story or two about how they were skating behind X building and were approached by Y asking/demanding that we Z. Insert your religious, political, civic duty, law abiding, criminal, homeless, rich-snob, security stooge and comments. Most skaters over 15 have been around long enough to hear how bad or stupid they are for trying to ride this thing. Having some people come to a public skateboard park just seems more novel than anything else. Totally harmless - but totally novel.

The under 12 crowd is another story. Approaching them is akin to child abuse. If they have an issue with kids that age taking up skating, they should direct their message to the parents. Make some flyers, hold a workshop. Show up on Helmet Safety Day at City Hall when you can catch 'em when they are really young. We'll make sure that our table is far far away from theirs - out of religious tolerance.

Ellen, you make a very key and important point. The sociological differentiation of the churches, sects, factions in Christianity, let alone in what have come to be called the evangelical 'movement' is suggestive of broad currents of religiosity coalescing into forms much much more interesting than their doctrinal aspects alone. Obviously, those doctrinal aspects are also extremely diverse.

There are, then, many currents, and it is so for evangelical Christianity. Not for nothing, for example, are there ministries in which communal and charitable features, (even to the extent of their having a quasi-new age cast and doctrinal inclusiveness, ) have become paramount to their mission.

Generalizations give way to accurate characterization of particulars. Doctrinal ethics are stamped into specific forms. Those forms are many in Christianity.

Vince, thanks for bringing more details to the table.

In your latest report, I get the impression of theatrics. Also, you have brought up some rich experiential details about what skateboarders have to put up with in general, how they develop the self-sense and skills and autonomy to react constructively to the range of persons who can't even be bothered to ask,

"Why do you skateboard?"

"What's it like?"

My guess is that there are some tactical geniuses among the skating crew.

***

Obviously the question begged is what is it about skateboarding, a practice not mentioned in Old or New Testament, that serves here as the rationale for this interaction.

they actually entered the park with the preeminent message that skateboarding is a sin and that they were praying for people that were skaters

"Preaching" isn't a technical term, alas. This seems kooky for sure. So, a group shows up, runs through a scripted bit of theatre with a rather common symbolic gravity to it, and then pronounces judgements in certain terms given by a religious framework. The outcome presumably is the point: a skateboarder will be peeled off, give up skating, have a religious experience, and at some future date show up in black outer garb?

That's entertainment!

***

The sinister aspect is the group's focusing on a group of young adults. I'm glad, it would seem, that the skateboarding crew is up to the challenge. But, from a psychological perspective, the targetting of the skateboarders may have as much to do with their age and their being somewhat captive in the park's fenced-in area, than it does with the specific 'sin'.

Keep in mind, it is possible that the given sin is merely the sin at the surface. There might also be considerable objection to the idea of kids freely choosing to spend their time amusing themselves with such a passionate diversion and/or commitment.

There is a drill-down beneath the weird surface sin of skateboarding. It is possible the underlying deficit is that the skateboarders are assumed to be damned because they haven't been saved, i.e. haven't found Christ. In this case, (musing out loud,) the skateboard park is a kind of anti-church, i.e. just happens to be a good place to locate groups of the damned.

Steelroots: State your name, age, your place of residence and sponsors?

Richard: My name is Richard Mulder and I am twenty-three. I live in Santa Anna, California and I am a professional skateboarder. I skate for Chocolate, Nike, Stussy, Diamond bolts, Thunder, Stealth Wheel Company, and Active. My current setup right now is my city series board, Thunder 145 highs, 52mm Stealth Richard Mulder wheels, Swiss Bones bearings, and I skate around in a pair of Nike low top dunks.

Steelroots: So is Nike going to actually make a skate shoe or are you just going to kick around in whatever you feel like?

Richard: Yeah were like bringing back a lot of old shoes like the black and red Air Jordans. That's what I have on my feet right now.

Steelroots: What's the best time of the day for you to skate, the best spot, and who with?

Richard: I like skating from like three to dark and as far as spots go I kind of have been skating lots of different spots. I skate the Girl Skate Park quite a bit.

Steelroots: Is that a private park just for team guys and friends and such?

Richard: Yes it is.. and I like skating with Lance Mountain and Jani Laitiala and the Chocolate team.

Steelroots: What's your idea of a good time?

Richard: My idea of a good time is just having fun skating with my friends. When I have a peace in my heart and I'm content knowing who I am and why I'm here. You know, I could have a good time staring at the wall because I have Jesus in my heart

Steelroots: That's cool...

Richard: As of late what is the gnarliest trick you've seen landed?

Steelroots: The Dan Wilkes boneless at the Stussy mini ramp by Sid

Richard: That's sweet...

Steelroots: What does being a Christian mean to you?

Richard: It means believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He came to die on the earth for our sins. And in believing that it changes your whole world in that you don't live for yourself but you live totally surrendered to His cause and what He did. It just means following Jesus, Loving Jesus, it's simple really.

Steelroots: But yet it's oh so complex in a lot of ways to. I feel what you're saying though.

Richard: It's complex because we as Christians make it that way. Because if we just really are led by the Spirit it won't be a bunch of do's and don'ts, God's spirit will just tell us.

Steelroots: So were you raised in a Christian home?

Richard: No, I gave my life to the Lord in September of 94.

Steelroots: So who led you to the Lord?

Richard: Not a particular person. I'd like to say that God the Father led me to the Lord. The Bible says that the Spirit convicts us, that Jesus is the truth. I really believe the Lord led me to the Lord.

Steelroots: Is it tough to be involved in skateboarding and walk with the Lord?

Richard: It's not really different than anything else. I mean sin is sin and skateboarding is sometimes portrayed as being gnarly. You just have to choose to walk in the Spirit and determine in your heart that you're going to serve the Lord. You have to walk in His grace and not have that compromised heart.

Steelroots: Are you going to church anywhere right now?

Richard: Yeah currently I go across the street to Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa when I'm in town. That's my local church.

Steelroots: Do you seek out any churches when you're overseas or in other countries, looking for other believers to fellowship with while you are on the road?

Richard: The Lord always orchestrates it where like I will run into a believer.

Steelroots: Skateboarding for the rest of your life or are we going to see Richard somewhere in the mission field in Italy or something?

Richard: Well that's rad because I'm not led by my skateboarding, I'm not directed by my skateboarding. The Lord has me skateboarding right now and I'm blessed. I'm thankful that God has given me this opportunity to shine the light of his Son in this world thru my skateboarding. As soon as God says Richard you're done with skateboarding then I will listen to the Lord.

Eagle is a Christian board riding team named after Isaiah 40:31, where it says if you wait on the Lord you will mount up with wings as Eagles and not grow weary, so that's where we get the name "Eagle."

Eagle hopes to (in the future) start a sk8 shop and share the good news of Jesus Christ to other sk8ers.

Our team faith means a lot. Our team isn’t all about skateboarding, now don't get me wrong, skating is fun, but there is a whole lot more to life than skateboarding! [-] Pray this - Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and have displeased You in many ways. I believe that You died for my sin and only through faith in Your death and resurrection can I be forgiven. I want to turn from my sin and ask You to come into my life as my Savior and Lord. From this day on, I will follow You by living a life that pleases You. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for saving me. Amen.

After you have received Jesus Christ into your life, tell a Christian friend about the important decision you have made. Join a good church and follow Christ’s example in believers baptism. Grow in faith by making strong Christian friends, and fellowshipping with them often.

Being a Christian isn’t an easy thing, a lot of times you get made fun of, or offended by the things people say, and I read stuff that makes me kind of mad, and hurts me, but you can’t let that get to you, pray for them, be strong, and skate on!

Fight the good fight!

We are called to stand out, not blend in. In Romans 15:20, Paul says that it has always been his ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so he would not be building on someone else's foundation. That is what we are doing also. Skateboarding is extremely popular these days, making it a great way to reach today's youth.

http://www.extremesportsmissions.com/werx.htm Skateboard Mission
ESM is starting a SKATEBOARD MISSION!
In Colorado, Tate Fails will manage the mission. Tate is an excellent skateboarder who desires to tell people about Jesus. In the spring of 2005, you will see him and others at skate parks in the Fruita and Grand Junction, Colo., area handing out water, serving those in need, and telling those that love skateboarding about Jesus. Did we mention Tate is 12 years old? None of us are too young or too old to serve the Lord.

Brandon Wolfe will manage this mission in Texas. He and his friends, Zac Golla and Timothy Jones love skateboarding and Jesus. You will see them at skateparks in the Houston area this spring serving those in need and telling those that love skateboarding about Jesus. These young people are an inspiration to us all!

Meanwhile...

http://www.rossetta.com/skatebrd.htm
Look at some of the ringleaders:

* Sinners in Las Vegas, drinking booze, high on drugs, and boasting about skateboarding in the casinos!
* Wicked Grind! they ADMIT the fact that skateboarding is wicked, and they DON'T CARE!

Over the years, many strong-willed juveniles have questioned Sister Rossetta on why skateboarding is a sin. Some don't even think the Bible talks about skateboarding!

Christian teens should have heard countless sermons from the pulpit on the evils of skateboarding, but society has degenerated to the point that even so-called Christians may not know the dangers surrounding that tool of the Devil, the skateboard

Sister Rossetta wants to settle this for good, so she has agreed to provide scriptural evidence to those who haven't read their Bibles lately, if at all:

Ezekiel 1:16-22
The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

Ezekiel describes the rudimentary elements of the skateboard. Naturally, such sinful conveyances didn't exist in his day, so he could only use the words of his generation. It sounds like four wheels on a skateboard to Sister Rossetta!

1:17
When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went.

Skateboarding juvenile deliquents, taking over the sidewalks and the streets, paying no heed to the havoc they wreak!

1:18
As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.

Ezekiel saw today's skateboarders wearing Nose rings, Earrings, Pierced navels, nipples and genitalia. All of them are high on drugs! Some of them are wearing dreadlocks!

1:19
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

Those youngsters won't go anywhere without their skateboards. When Ezekiel says they were "lifted up," he can only be describing skateboard air-borne manuevers.

1:20
Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

The teenagers are completely controlled by their skateboards! And Satan has dominion over them!

1:21
When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

Peer pressure to follow the crowd! And Satan in control!

1:22
And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.

Certainly these are the "terrible crystals" young people wear around their necks!

So ask yourself, Are skateboarders bad people--even criminals?
YES! Because Skateboarding is a SIN!

Who is this Sister Rosetta?

http://www.rossetta.com/970413.htm
Dear Sister Rossetta,

The other night my teenage son confessed to me that he has been having homosexual thoughts. Even worse, when he has these thoughts, he "spills his seed upon the ground"!!!

To save him from the eternal flames to which our righteous and loving God will surely condemn, I feel that I must set him "straight". My question is this: If I bring him to a prostitute in order to change his sexual orientation, is that a sin? Or does God make an exception for these dire situations?

Sincerely yours,
Reverend Mr. Thing

Dear Reverend Mr. Thing,

You must contact Sister Rossetta's Exodus Christian Love Rehabilitation authorities immediately to arrange for electro-shock therapy. Read these columns for an outline of the treatment:

* Bad Seeds: Marijuana and Masturbation
* It's all a Blur: Girls who want Boys who like Boys...

It would be a mortal sin to bring your son to a prostitute. The Bible Clearly States so. God's answer lies in the marriage bed. You must secure a daughter of Zion as your son's eternal betrothed. Once he tastes the sweet joy of marital union with a Christian woman, and with continued shock treatments, he will no longer have impure thoughts.

If all else fails, sooner or later the happy couple will have children. Then, your son will be locked into a normal lifestyle, no matter what his inclination, and all will be well with God.

It worked for Michael Jackson, didn't it?
Sister Rossetta

Didn't have any luck finding any info on why any Christian would condemn skateboarding. Although, it may be true that such condemnation is a unique property of the ethic of a local church.

On the other hand, the "skateboarding is a sin" meme does provide some amusing hits of the tongue-in-cheek variety. To whit:

THE BIBLE CLEARLY STATES
by Mark Peters
http://epc.buffalo.edu/ezines/deluxe/seven/bible.html

The Bible clearly states that a proper rosary string also has a crucifix! Because that's what the Bible clearly states! The bible clearly states that God has killed millions of unborn children and infants. The Bible clearly states that skateboarding is a SIN! The Bible clearly states that entropy began well before the fall. I happen to believe that the Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. The Bible clearly states that there is only one true God and that we are to Worship Him only. The Bible clearly states that with God a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day. The Bible clearly states that one puff of marijuana, and you're in league with Satan himself. The Bible clearly states that we are to help those in need. The Bible clearly states that Jesus will come again and judge all men. The Bible clearly states that all men will be present for that judgment. But the Bible clearly states that all homosexual behavior is sinful, and must be forsaken in the life of a Christian believer. God's word, the Bible, clearly states that whether you go to heaven or hell has nothing to do with who does good or bad. The Bible clearly states that deceiving spirits are sent out into the world to lead people away from a knowledge of God. The Bible clearly states that many truths of the Christian faith were to be handed down by word of mouth. The Bible clearly states that although many people claim to speak for God, only a few really do. The Bible clearly states that Jesus is the head of the church, and that it is not to be run by one man. The Bible clearly states otherwise. In fact, the Bible clearly states that angels are "men" or "people." The difference between the Reformed faith and less consistent types of Christianity is that the Reformed faith does not argue or reason against the supremacy of God, nor against what the Bible clearly states. The Bible clearly states that every land animal and bird on the face of the earth was wiped out (Genesis 6:7, 7:21-23). The Bible states clearly that God created us with a purpose and thus each person is a special creation made by the Almighty Himself. The Bible clearly states that if any unfaithful woman drinks of the Adultery Detecting Potion, her belly will swell and her thighs will rot. The Bible clearly states that Jesus kissed the feet of His apostles. The bible clearly states they'd only use the money for cheap booze or illegal drugs. The Bible clearly states that there is only one God. We know that Christ was doing the will of the Father because the Bible clearly states this. Furthermore, the Bible clearly states that it is "on account of the chosen ones" that the opening phase of the great tribulation will be "cut short." In Romans 5:12 the Bible clearly states that through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin. As we have seen, while the Bible clearly states that all Christians are priests, it said the same thing about the Israelites, yet this did not prevent there from being a separate, ministerial priesthood even before the Law of Moses was given. It is now 9 months and 10 days since the flood began -- The Bible clearly states that the Flood covered the whole earth, it was not just a local flood as some believe. The Bible clearly states in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned. In l Corinthians 14:33, the Bible clearly states that God is not the author of confusion. The Bible clearly states that it is Jesus who gives the gifts as he wills and that Jesus is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. While the Bible clearly states that within Jesus' unique nature He was both fully God and fully man; the cults disagree. The Bible however, clearly states that the earth does not move. As the Bible clearly states, the devil will gladly disguise himself as an "angel of light" in order to deceive Christians (2 Cor 11:14). The Bible clearly states the age of the earth – in the beginning (Genesis1:1). The Bible clearly states that each person must face judgment. The Bible clearly states that wealth or the power to get wealth comes from God: De 8:18. Well, when it comes to abstaining from compulsions, the Bible clearly states that fellowship, rather than treatment, is the answer. The Bible clearly states that Moses fled from Egypt to Midian, that he tended his flock in Midian, where Mt. Sinai was located. The Bible clearly states Jesus will return immediately after the great tribulation. The Bible clearly states that Mary was a virgin, and that Jesus was conceived supernaturally by the Holy Spirit, not through sexual intercourse. In stark contrast, the Bible clearly states that the Lord of heaven made all things. Where the world says that there is no need of salvation and redemption, the Bible clearly states that all people are in need of deliverance from their sin. The Bible clearly states that God "called" the animals to the ark. The Bible clearly states this in Genesis. The Bible clearly states the roles of every family member and the importance and significance of each. He claims that the Bible clearly states that no man should pray to imagery, and he further announced that God told him to knock over all graven images. The Bible clearly states that legitimate earthly authority -- including the authority to tax -- should be obeyed. And The Bible clearly states that after having spent an 'eternity' in Hell, the rich man will be brought before God, where he will be judged and sentenced to spend 'another' eternity in the lake of fire. We believe the Bible clearly states that marriage is the only context for sexual intimacy. But the Bible clearly states that no one lives on after death. To use that reasoning would be to say that all sin must be approved, for the Bible clearly states that we are all born with sinful natures. The Bible clearly states certain absolute standards to follow in life such as the Ten Commandments. The Bible clearly states that a great Apostasy must occur before Christ's Second Coming. The bible clearly states that the fathers are to be the head of the household. The Bible clearly states in the very first chapter of Genesis, that God created the stars to provide light at night. Galileo's opponents pointed out that the Bible clearly states "the sun stood still, and the moon stayed" (Josh. 10:13). The Bible clearly states we do not know the day nor the hour. You can search all you want; you won't find anywhere in the bible that clearly states that angels have wings.

Ellen Malonis wrote:"By their fruit you will know them..."

Not all evangelicals are dominionists.

As I was telling DH about this discussion this morning, I described "a bunch of evangelicals." He stopped me and reminded me that he is an evangelical and his church is evangelical.

He asked me what I thought we were doing when we joined more than 150 people from his church at the Pride Parade.

While I understand what evangelism is, I think of it more in terms of the group of people who had gathered to yell at the parade participants, who made known their views about our chances in the afterlife.

I don't think of it as what happens when one friend recommends their church to another.

I'm not making that comparison regarding the reported activities of the folks at the skate park, but I am mentioning it in terms of how people perceive the term "evangelical" and confuse it with fundamentalist (or dominionist) evangelical (as I frequently do).

I'm still hunting for the info.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
http://www.valleycov.org/prayerwalk.shtml
Valley Covenant Evangelical Church; Stillman, Illinois

Be alert as you walk or drive. Remember: Safety first!

Feel free to pray either silently or aloud. And, don't let moments of silence make you or your prayer partner(s) feel uncomfortable.

Be aware of how the Holy Spirit may be leading. He may, for example, prompt you to speak to someone along the way in order to invite him or her to church. If He does, enjoy the opportunity to be His gentle voice of encouragement. You might be the only smile that person gets all day!

Make this a family event! Talk about it in advance and plan a short easy route for small children. Encourage your older children to pray while they ride their bike or skateboard around the neighborhood.

By "disconnect", I meant that the topic turned quickly to "christians" taking over the government. That to me is different from a church group's rude and misguided proselytizing.

Ah, I misunderstood what you were saying, Ellen. Thanks for clarifying. I feel better now.

This kind of situation is so frustrating to me, as someone who works with kids, who has a child, and is personally invested in the success of the park. I'm glad the discussion is focusing more on the appropriateness/inappropriateness of preaching to other people's children at a public park when many of their parents aren't around, although I see why you included your excerpt in light of the direction the discussion was taking.

It seems that there is consensus that the behavior was inappropriate to a greater or lesser degree. The question, then, turns back to what can we do in such situations.

1. Ignore
2. Call the police if people are disturbing the peace or interfering with safe use of the park.

Council members? Mayor? Any further comments from your unique perspectives?

Man, this is frustrating. Not only can I not find the goods, but the more I look, the more it seems that skateboarding is almost the equivalent of a Christian spiritual practice!

Skating to help teens' spirituality
God is cool: Boards, bikes and Baldwin promote Christianity
http://www.webstreetcafe.com/news/j04skate.htm

SPECIAL TO THE HERALD NEWS

TINLEY PARK â€â€￾ Onward Christian skateboarders!

The sea of spiky hair and baggy pants expected at today's "Livin' It Skate and BMX Demo" in Tinley Park will be getting a bit more than just kick flips and bike tricks.

They'll get a hefty dose of Jesus, too.

Between trips through the half-pipe, the half-dozen extreme athletes will be giving testimonials about how finding Jesus has changed their lives.

Organizers hope the professional skateboarding and bicycle show will draw as many as 5,000 young people, said Dawn Lyons-Dean, a spokeswoman for Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, one of the event's sponsors.

"They may not listen to somebody standing at a pulpit," she said. "But if it's somebody with spiked hair and an earring flipping on a skateboard and doing it in the name of Christ, then suddenly God seems pretty cool."

Today's event will run from noon to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Trinity Lutheran Church, 6850 W. 159th St., just east of Harlem Avenue.

It's the fourth stop on a 22-city tour arranged by the Oregon-based Luis Palau Evangelistic Association ministry and headlined by actor Stephen Baldwin. Several of the professional and amateur performers are from the Idaho-based King of Kings Ministry, a group of Christian skateboarders.

The King of Kings ministry, along with the surprising success of a Livin' It skateboarding DVD released last year (90,000 sold and counting), prompted the Luis Palau Association to pull the tour together.

Most of the event will focus on skating and BMX demonstrations. Each athlete and Baldwin will spend only a few minutes explaining how they believe Jesus has helped them in their lives.

Association vice president Kevin Palau said he's not trying to convert unsuspecting kids to Christianity. He just wants them to meet some people who believe in Jesus and are cool at the same time, he said.

"Don't ram it down their throats," Palau said. "If they're interested, let the kids figure it out themselves. I don't pretend to be cool. I don't even know what lingo to use. I just want to get the message of God out to kids."

But organizers said they've tallied more than 250 "conversions" during the first three stops on the tour in the Southeast.

"I'm looking for the kid who is way far away (from God), and I bring him one step closer," Palau said. "For most people, it's a step-by-step process. It's not something that happens overnight or because you see somebody skateboarding."

David Gray, a LaGrange resident who grew up in Chicago's Beverly community and attends Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park, is the local organizer of the event. He said the multi-denominational organizers just want to give youths a less-stereotypical view of modern Christianity.

"We're going to actually see role models who are open and honest in who they are," Gray said. "That's what we're missing today. We live in a society that says to hide your weaknesses and your struggles. Forget that. These guys will be out there sharing the word and sharing all they've been through."

Actor Stephen Baldwin Now Leading Christian Man

Baldwin says, "It's awesome for me to consider what the Lord has done"

By Greg Garrison

(RNS) - Before leaving for his 11-year-old daughter Alaia's ballet recital, actor Stephen Baldwin had to fend off 8-year-old daughter Hailey, who began calling for him as he talked on the telephone with a reporter. "Tell your mother we're going to leave in nine minutes," he told Hailey.

Soon, Baldwin was driving his wife, Kennya, and their daughters in the Volvo station wagon through Nyack, N.Y., on the way to the ballet recital. A man in a BMW convertible pulled up beside them at a stoplight and yelled that he loved Baldwin's recent documentary on Christian skateboarders. Such is life these days for the hunky movie star turned Christian family man.

Baldwin kept chatting on the cell phone, talking about his career in movies and television, and his conversion to Christianity two years ago. Baldwin, 38, said his famous acting brothers, Alec, Daniel and William, have all been supportive of his new spiritual outlook.

"It's gotten a lot of people praying for them to get into the kingdom," Baldwin said. "I don't pressure them or anybody else for that matter. I've come to realize very early in my walk that it's usually by example that people can be most receptive. If you lead by example, people will be intrigued and curious and maybe it will get them to read the Word."

Baldwin said he became a Christian after watching his wife immersed in Bible study and prayer. "I watched her devoutly in prayer every day," Baldwin said. "It really blew my mind."

At first he didn't know how to react, he said. "One of the smartest things you can do in a marriage when you're scared is keep your mouth shut," he said. "She was my wife and best friend. Every morning and evening, she spent 30 to 45 minutes in prayer. She still does it. I clearly saw less of a worry in her personality in regard to the things of the world."

Once he became a born-again Christian, Baldwin said, "I went out and looked for all the cool Christian stuff, and there wasn't any." But he attended a Luis Palau Evangelistic Association festival that featured a skateboarding park, which he saw as an opportunity to "make Christianity cool."

He suggested the possibility of an extreme sports documentary on Christian skateboarders and motocross bikers. "I said, `I wonder if there's something we can do,'" Baldwin said. "I'll edit it for you; we'll put it to cool music." So he became the host and director of a PalauFest Productions DVD called
"Livin' It," which mixes footage of eight top skaters and four top BMX riders in action, along with features on their faith. It's being used as an evangelistic outreach.

"We're onto something," Baldwin said. "Using new exciting methods to reach the youth of this country is the best way to get a response. The response to `Livin' It' has been so overwhelmingly positive." (excerpt)
