It is more likely that Trump feels the only way to effectively “sell” the disengagement of our war with Russia is by fostering a sentiment in our public that it is Ukraine’s fault. Blackrock and others will have to get their cut, or bailout. Naturally.

The United States had been the leading proponent of free trade for the last 80 years. This had generally accelerated every few decades. Americans generally agree with this, because they keep re-electing the proponents of this. When they vote republican they are sort of voting for lower income taxes for the people and companies that make the most money from importing and outsourcing. When they vote democrat they are generally voting for a few more bandaids for consequences of escalations in outsourcing.

The free trade deals were never unfair to the U.S. Americans are not cheated by other countries. The free trade deals may be considered bad, or stupid, depending upon your perspective. But that does not matter. The U.S. has fundamentally re-ordered itself in the preceding decades. The modern suburban sprawl paradigm cannot be re-industrialized in any way that makes U.S. industry competetive with japan or south korea or taiwan or china or even germany or sweden.

There is no way to repeat Winning World War 2 again. And America’s upside of Winning World War 2 again. There is also no way to repeat America’s perceived perception of winning the Cold War again.

Ukraine does not owe the United States anything.
All of their activities have been as a pawn or functionary of the United States. I am not sure if the Trump Administration intentionally presented them with terms that make it in their best interest to treat with Russia with a complete lack of U.S. participation. Or, maybe he is just trying to score Blackrock and other financial interests huge paydays.

Trump had promised severe tariffs on all of U.S. trading partners. No matter how friendly or neutral or geographically close. One of the benefits of this is that it gives all of these nations the freedom to collectively ignore him until he indiscreetly forgets about the whole thing. They do not even have to pressure him to apologize.

Freeman understands U.S. bargaining stature.

The rest of the world has some understanding of how some U.S. policies are arrived at. They can discuss this more candidly among themselves. Or, at least, acknowledge an implicit understanding among themselves.

He understands America’s bargaining stature. Clout. Weight. Credibility.
It has nothing to do with how our different factions are getting their own constituents revved up. Stoked.
