The goal is not to reduce the budget. It is to get a bigger piece of it.

One of the main purposes of NATO is to increase U.S. influence over European policies. It is not a question of member nations pulling their weight.
The second purpose of NATO is to legitimize actions that are mainly Unilateral U.S. Actions. A veneer of legitimacy. A veneer of multilateralism.
The U.S. won’t be closing many bases in Europe, because their primary purpose is to be there for whichever actions the U.S. wants to do in the middle wast and north africa.
Not many Americans campaign for Congress with a promise to shut down whichever military or federal law enforcement activities are in their district or state.

Even though i voted democrat for all of the federal offices in 2024, i still laughed at them for losing. Because they deserved it. However, i am reasonably confident the performance of the current administration will get certain factions of republicans voted out of federal offices for over a decade.

It had been a war between the United States and Russia the entire time. Great diligence had been exercised during that time to pretend it was not. Now that the United States has decided to not be at war with Russia, the main priority is to avoid culpability.

I do not know which level of magnanimity is optimal for events like this. Maybe if world war 1 was called off one year into it. Hopefully Chas Freeman and Jack Matlock will think about this for a few days and have something to say next week. I haven’t heard anything from Andrew Bacevich in a while.

The United States had been in the precarious position of both pretending it is not at war with russia and pretending it is at war with russia at the same time.
