A while back I was at a public meeting for future Observer project in another city, and a visual artist came up to me and said, "What I find fascinating and enjoyable is how Lakewood Observer members, use photos, videos and songs in their discussions."
So with that in mind, and the desperate cry for sing-a-longs, I present an LO Songbook, of inspirational folk tunes for all. Please feel free to add to this.
While no one appreciates friends like Gary, Sharon, Charlie and othersmore than I. There are some fundamental differences between us all, and that is not always a bad thing if anything it should help all of us see both a clearer picture, and decide what we think to ourselves of what is going on out there.
Many of us old timers fall into a couple different camps. We have Gary that always has a kind word, ready to turn the other cheek, one would say an almost Zen like quality, that drives him into a discussion to try to smooth the waters. Then people like Sharon and myself, that have always felt the biggest problem during the Vietnam War were the pacifists kept getting in the way.
For those of us that remember and appreciate those that fight the good fight for others like Sharon, and myself.
For Gary I go back to his favorite Pete Seeger
For Charlie, Complain from the Tim Robbins' film Bob Roberts
For Matt Markling, Frank Sinatra
For Jimmy O'Bryan, back to Phil Ochs
Now back to Pete Seeger All together now!
Or to quote Ghandi Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.
or
I want freedom for the full expression of my personality.
I am sure that as in most things the truth and path we all seek, lies somewhere in the middle.
Carry on.

Jim,
Nice post.
I'll just offer one lil' observation about me though, so that folks don't entirely get the wrong idea.
Even though it might seem as if I'm the one always trying to resolve and smooth over issues here...
do not...
for one minute...
think...
that I was not involved in the struggle for human dignity, human rights, and achieving a better world for those needful or less fortunate among us.
Still am, in fact.
I just try to pick my battles a little more wisely than I used to. (smile)
Those of us who have known struggle are often the ones who value conflict resolution the most.
Back to the banjo...

If you're a liberal you are considered an activist.
If you're a conservative, you're a complainer.
Nice Jim.

I guess you have not seen the film?
It is a story of a right wing/conservative/religious/millionaire/folk singer played by Tim Robbins that runs for senate.
That line is actual a jab at liberals, in other words, "Oh you guys are activists and we are just complainers..."
Trailer
Another song from the movie, Tim with the very talented Kelly Willis.
to be fair to Kelly Willis, see this live clip.

I forgot about that movie. The most hysterical thing about it was that Tim Robbins is so liberal that the liberals call him liberal.
