Ben-- Glenn Palmer brings up some excellent points. However, I would offer an additional way of looking at insulating a house. It would be to put it in a logical sequence of improvements. For instance, if you think that there will be a need to replace or upgrade mechanicals-- wiring and plumbing, these two tasks should be done before insulating because it is much easier and cheaper to pull wire and communications cable through open walls and also to make sure you have copper or plastic supply lines instead of old galvanized inside the walls.
Once you have achieved these goals then go back and revisit the insulation question.
