Richard,

It's not the comma, it's the context.

When I got my Selective Service number for the draft when I turned 18, Yes, I expected to bear Arms for our country, but not to have to bring my own.

Our State (Ohio) has a long-standing and well-organized militia called the Ohio National Guard. It has the Arms. No one has to bring their own.

A variety of "militias" disorganized and armed to various degrees demonstrated their "support" for the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights by overrunning the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 in a misguided attempt to forestall the legal duties of the Electoral College.

Like most property ownership in our country, the ownership of firearms, while permitted, is not sacrosanct and is subject to long-recognized standards related to public safety.

The incidents of shootings noted in the press over the past week remind me that it is dangerous to ring a doorbell, pull into a driveway, or try to get into the wrong vehicle in our society.

LHS Students understand, like their peers, that gun violence is a threat to them and can be regulated by legislation without impairing the rights of firearms hobbyists who hunt, who collect muskets, or who enjoy trap shooting, etc.
