I am Treasurer of Save Lakewood Hospital and Right To Vote.

Just for the record, Jim O'Bryan never donated any money to Save Lakewood Hospital or Right to Vote. Jim O'Bryan never contributed any in kind contributions to Save Lakewood Hospital or Right to Vote. Save Lakewood Hospital and Right to Vote paid for ads appearing in the Observer.

While some supporters and members of Save Lakewood Hospital wrote articles that appeared in the Observer, opponents of Save Lakewood Hospital and opponents of the Right To Vote had the same opportunity. I was disappointed that elected officials and members of the Board of Lakewood Hospital refused to take advantage of the Observer to air their views. Their failure to take advantage of that opportunity reflects on them and not on Jim O'Bryan or the Lakewood Observer.

The smear campaign being waged against the Observer is just part of a quiet campaign to close down an independent newspaper. Don't fall for the lies, or as Jim O'Bryan would say, "bullshit".

I wouldn't characterize it as a quiet campaign. It's all out war.

Pae, Foran, all the mayor's surrogates are attacking, and have been. The lawsuit - that's a huge, expensive undertaking.

Speaking of the lawsuit, it will be enlightening when it's revealed who is bankrolling it. That will tell it all.

I support Jim O,Bryan and Lakewood Observer. Without Lakewood Observer, the mayor and his allies would be able to spread lies without any opposition. At least the people who care about Lakewood can read what is going on by listening to real people not someone who is trying to profit from the closure of Lakewood Hospital. That is what I believe.

James

Support for the Observer is far more important than any support of Jim O'Bryan.

I do find it amazing, how a source for resident's, businesses', and even their voice as fair as we can possible be, painted as the enemy.

Jenn Pae, Jay Foran, City Hall have way more column inches in the Lakewood Observer than Jim O'Bryan.
Ask City Hall, Build Lakewood, Jenn Pae, Jay Foran, if they were ever turned down, edited, censored for anything?

Since Day 1, we have offered Lakewood City Hall, 3 pages in the front of the paper to get their issues out, and frame the issues, WITH NO EDITING BY THE LO.
They didn't want to give the LO credibility! If you look at their own mailings quoting the LO, it was some of the only credibility they had.

Lakewood Observer is not fair?

Tom Bullock boosted (paid to have a post repeated) at least one of his LO articles on Facebook extensively.

It is not funny, it is hilarious.

The Editor and her husband are Tom's good friend and past roommate.

It appears that our incompetent Mayor decided to try to persuade his alleged criminal friends at the County and the County Courts to go along with these bullshit lawsuits.

Lord Lakewood may act like a dictator now. The question is, how long will, or can it last?

Sooner or later, most alleged crooks slip up somewhere. Who in the Summer's mafia, minus the guns, will slip up first? Tick tock, tick tock.

If you defame a private individual, that person would have to be able to prove:
1) that you made a statement, reported as fact, to another person;
2) that the statement was false;
3) that the statement caused damage to that person; and
4) that you were negligent in making that statement.

If you defame a public figure (such as a celebrity or member of government, for example), that person will have to prove:
1) that you made a statement to another person, reported as fact;
2) that the statement was false and caused damage; and
3) that you made the statement with actual malice-that is, with knowledge that the statement was false or with reckless disregard as to whether the statement was false or not.

Remember, however, that you cannot be held liable for voicing your opinion, only for making untrue factual assertions.
As long as we are at this point, and it is the holiday season.

Let's work at posting things, that do not give us the need to understand libel and slander.

I fear the city is suffering a bit from the people who cried wolf, on all sides.

In this season, let's try to respect the flavor of the poster or originator of the thread, let's work to self moderate our own discussions. Let's speak more of lies instead of liars, and let's never forget, that many of people who we disagree with you, or you see as doing wrong are well meaning. Of course there are some mean nasty people out there too.

I offer this only as a suggestion.

Actually, they did take advantage of The Lakewood Observer to express their views and opinions. Dozens of articles in support of closing the hospital appeared on its pages, including pieces written by Board of Education Member, Linda Beebe; Council Members, Sam O’Leary, Dave Anderson, Ryan Nowlin, Cindy Marx; and Tom Bullock and John Litten, who had also served on the board of the Lakewood Hospital Association.

ONLY in The Lakewood Observer were both sides of the hospital debate well (and fairly) represented throughout the campaign. Our community is fortunate to have it.
