Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I tried Mike's on Madison this past saturday morning (right around the corner from where I live), and had a nice haircut, and he did use the straight razor around my ears very nicely. All in all, a good haircut. I still plan on trying a few others, to see what other barbers offer, but so far, so good!

Any chance we could get you to write a story about this experience for the paper?

Details, please.

Who loused up your dome while living here?

You are sounding like a toney Virginian rather than a Lakewood homie.

Where are you going and what are you paying these days in VA?

What are they doing the Lakewood choppers couldn't?

Ken, The name of the shop was "Mark's" or "Marc's" --not the discounter. I really don't remember the location but it was just off Detroit on one of the streets down near the Beck Center. I never saw the place again, which now that I think of it, endows the experience with a rather surreal quality.
I remember few details, other than the barber had had a crush on a woman who worked at Case whom I knew slightly and he spoke at length about his experience in the merchant marine. Maybe his name was Marlowe, Ken? No, the shop wasn't on Marlowe. When I looked in the mirror at my combover I muttered "the horror, the horror."

I don't mean to disparage the entire Lakewood tonsorial community. I made my rounds 'round the shops mentioned in this thread and thought most of them just fine for working with the material I brought in. The best barber I encountered in the area was Ray on Lorain Road in Fairview Park.

These days, Helen is cutting my hair out on the patio. We have to dodge a hummingbird or two, but the price is extremely right and she doesn't do a bad job.

So much for being a toney Virginian, eh? But if I live here another year, I get to say I have an ancestor who served in what is known here as "the late unpleasantness" or "the war of northern aggression."

Are you sure it was not Brigadoon? I do not remember any haricutting dentist near the Beck. Then was Mr. Ken's that offered unisex cuts, Siccor's Wizard, but I cannot think of Mark's

How is the fishing?

You are missed, and Billy D had to duck 50 humminbirds just last week.

Hey everyone, great thread. I plan to try a few of these listed. (Maybe we should have the same conversations to recommend doctors and dentists?)

Mike's Saturday co-barber is named Ron, I believe. I've gotten my hair cut two or three times by him and I recommend him as much as Mike--maybe more, in fact. He seemed to figure out how to cut my hair so it laid right...

I'm with Ken: the straight-razor is gives the extra edge...

I know you're agains salons, but I go to Joe Laponza at Vision Hair Studio in Rocky River. I will not let my hair be cut by anyone else.

Under the heading "House Talk" ...I've been asking and receiving recommendations for different people and services etc...... as have a few others from this forum ....and it's great to not to have to look in the phone book or online yellowpages or throw a dart at a map and say YES..thats where I'll go ..and end up sorry later.

Point tho' is more people look up here than down there at that heading, at least by responses and views it appears that way to me.

Anyway, at least SOME recommendation is better than a shot in the dark, IMO.

Mark

On the front page we are building the most complete Lakewood directory out there. We have also started work on a section for people to recommend business for various services.

Believe me we are working as fast as we can. Dare I say the difference between Lakewood Observer 2006 and 2007 will be staggering.

Tom-

There's been a thread about dentists, which lead me to Dr. Mark Loper at Madison Avenue Family Dentistry.

Not only was it a good recommendation, but MAFD is now a LO advertiser!

But I'm still looking for a good, inexpensive haircutter. Finding one for women isn't easy!

dl ..since long ago I had a couple hair shops ...and used to know just about everyone in the biz ..especially on the west side and far east side..I'll sniff around and see if a few people are still in the city or close by.

If you see the name Dennis Petcak ..he's excellent btw. Not sure at the moment if he's working FOR someone ..or has his own place. He and his former partner Patti used to work for me, and later bought my 2nd shop Moxies and built it up bigtime.
I'll see about a few others too.

If it's any consolation, Joe Laponza is a Lakewood resident...

David:

That's a huge consolation.

You made my day.

You're no weenie.

You're a terrific Woodie, helping pitch a Lakewood neighbor.

No need for you to face Mike's blade.

Your post raises the point that we should do a survey of how many Lakewood residents own businesses in Rocky River and somehow create an affinities list for shopping.

Stino's is great Italian restaurant in RR, with a Lakewood owner, serving terrific eggplant parmagiana.

I leave town to patronize Lakewood neighbors.

In a certain sense, this is probably the smart way to approach local economic development, esp since Lakewood retail seems thin to some shoppers.

It's not about the sales tax; it's about your neighbor getting a taste of the profit from your cash flow. Mutual aid and solidarity, building the brand across the region.

Get a list of Woodies and their businesses outside Lakewood.

A value added to the Lakewood shopping experience.

The last time I was at Joe's salon (with my girlfriend, she was getting her hair cut for graduation), we saw Eileen McShea getting her hair done as well...

I may have to check out Stino's, as eggplant parmigiana is my favorite Italian dish. Thanks!

Marc's Barbershop was on Bonnieview, right off Detroit, on the east side of the street. Hair Force used to be next door to his shop, before it moved onto Detroit.
