I would hope a high end complex would have their own fitness center. Maybe they would even serve Stan's favorite seaweed drink he has after workouts.Amy Martin wrote:The great news is that all of these renters will be able to just cross the street to enjoy the new "wreck" center!

Perhaps the apartments will offer private, at-the-ready, motor-running ambulance service with direct priority service to the nearest full-service ED (wherever that may be).

You know, this did make me think back to when the Barton Center went to apartments, thinking wow, it makes sense to have senior places near hospital. Now we everything we know, and where people were through this, and them knowing back 5 - 13 years, hmmmmmmmmmm.cmager wrote:Perhaps the apartments will offer private, at-the-ready, motor-running ambulance service with direct priority service to the nearest full-service ED (wherever that may be).
Looking back it all becomes very clear.

BRILLIANT!
I just watched the future of health care in Lakewood and it all begins with a 1-800... number.

Lakewood Center North Garage: In 1972 Lakewood happily displaced 22 families and took 22 homes on Belle and St Charles, to build the garage FOR THE DEVELOPER. Even though the law said the developer must provide xx number of parking spaces for whatever he is building. City said: No problem! WE'LL build your garage for you. Developer was Victor Babin, brother of Steve Babin who owned Babin Furs.
Lakewood took my house in 1972 - 7 years after I-90 took my house in 1965.

Here's a story from the original property sale from 2013. Hearkens back to the hotel study and speculates that there were no specific plans for the building... also that it was half empty at the time of purchase, and was bought less than a quarter of what the seller paid for it in 2006.
I'm wondering what tenant in their right mind would want to stay there while the building undergoes a massive redo to residential ... doesn't seem like it would be a healthy or enjoyable existence for office workers amid the dust and noise.

I love the Dr Siley, quote: "This is great news for Lakewood" --2013. The largest building in Lakewood sells for $13 per square foot--25% of the pre-crash selling price and that's "GREAT NEWS" Huh?
At the Univ Akron event Siley led concerning possible uses for the hospital site in 2015, Siley claimed that demand for "Class A" office space is Lakewood was "high". He criticized the Lakewood Center North owner for failing to maintain their property. Hmmm.
When a middle-aged businessman citizen asked Siley "won't the developers [of the hospital site] want to design and build what they want since they are the ones investing the money?" Siley responded "No. Its our property, we will tell them what we we want and they will build it." I thought when I heard that at the time I was living in a communist country with "central planning"
I am starting to see why so many people tell me that Summers and Siley are the worst city planners in Lakewood's history.
Class A office space in congested downtown Lakewood far from I-90?
How did that work for the INA Building and Lakewood Center North people in decades gone by? Hmmmm
Also on April 4, 2016, Council President Sam O’Leary said city council went into executive session to hear from the Summers administration and discuss “the city’s sale strategies relative to” the hospital properties. However, “discussing sale strategies” for public properties is not a legal reason for executive session.
This appears to be a "central planning" disaster in the making.

Mr.Essi, I have no reason to doubt the claim that Summers and Siley "are the worst city planners in Lakewood's history." I would add with certainty, that they are the most deceitful public servants in Lakewood history and that makes for quite a corrosive daily double. As for those 3 paragons of transparency O'Leary, Anderson, Marx, they are a disgrace.

Just saw that I failed to correctly use the quote function in my last post. That whole first section was a Brian Essi post. Apologies Mr. Essi.

Re: Lakewood Center North to Become Apartments?
People need to stop tearing down the Brutalist style of architecture of Lakewood Ctr North and it's little buddies. It was obviously very popular at the time (50s-70s) and it will be again someday. Tastes are cyclical. Look at what Cleveland did with the Ameritrust, now "The 9" building downtown, another building in the Brutalist style. It was some very creative thinking that saved and repurposed that building into what it is today. Not to mention that the building was the ONLY skyscraper designed by Marcel Breuer, more well known for low-rise projects like the North Wing addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
I just shake my head when I think about all the architectural gems we've destroyed under the guise of "old, ugly, out-of-date" etc. It's a cultural crime how we so brazenly destroy our own history in favor of what is "new" today. Case in point.

Re: Lakewood Center North to Become Apartments?
I understand the architectural significance of the renovated "9" downtown because of the architect ...while my personal preference would have been to pull the dynamite plunger myself and blow up that hideous collection of concrete ice cube trays, it's not about me and my preferences. Sometimes "ugly" (as I see it) is important.
If LCN is somehow architecturally significant, fine. I've only been here since 88, so I am a relative short timer. It makes me personally ill just looking at it .... but if it has some architectural significance worthy of salvage, that's fine. If it's mostly empty, full of bad stuff that needs abating, and is being converted to residences anyway, it's worth asking if the alternative of starting over is on the table.
"We" do have a history of blowing truly historic stuff up in Lakewood ... I still haven't forgiven anyone for the Matthew C. Hall house.
