I don't know what WTAM is nor who Bob Franz is. but I would guess that it is something run by that part of the entertainment industry that thrives on controversy, and thus encourages outrageous postings. Since I tune out such "entertainment" before they get to their second damn, I don't have any familiarity with them, and have no desire to swim in their cesspool. My prejudice is that the hosts are probably intelligent and are just playing a role, but that the posters would be unlikely to have any good ideas. In that segment of the industry, if there were no outrageous postings showing up, they would fake some, or shut down the forum.

I would cite fodors.com as a site where people are cvil and helpful, despite using usernames. We all know each other, even though we don't necessarily know each other's actual names. And everytime an uncivil person shows up, someone reports him to the moderator, who advises him of the requirement for civility, and if that advice is ignored. the malefactor is flushed. There are any number of sites where the discourse is civil despite anonymity. It all depends on how effectively the site is run.

Usenet, at least where the forums are unmoderated, is a different question, and any number of groups have been destroyed by vandals.

So I suggest that forums using posternames can be very effective, and I think in the case where the subjects, as here, are local, you would be likely to get fuller participation if people had no reason to think that a pit bull devotee would be likely to show up at their door with their dog to dispute their posting that pit bulls are dangerous.

So at a city council meeting the public can wear masks and a name tag.."Hello my name is Billy Bob______" , and no one will know who you really are unless you have a pitbull, muzzled of course!
I have yet to see anything that threatening on this deck and I believe thats in part to using real names. It is way too easy to hide behind that ohh soo creative screen name. The folks that participate on the Deck may be a small community but when I think about it, it is a bit of a reflection on how many people actually do take the time to attend to issues in this city.
Buy using screen names, the entire mission of The Lakewood Observer becomes moot.

I think that's a bit of a hyperbole.

My entire problem with this situation as it's unfolded is what could be considered an unequal enforcement of the "rules" that exist here, and which only seem to exist at certain times.

Of course this is said with full understanding that only part of the story is being shared, but the part that has been shared I think calls into question the fairness of the situation.

If the poster who has now been banned was truly banned for insulting people, I can find about a dozen or so other posts where the posters should have also been banned for insults, slander, and fabrication of lies about other people and posters. However none of that ever happened.

Something just doesn't feel right, but that could simply be a factor of the part of the story that was shared.

IMHO, this was a private situation that never should have been publicly shared anyway. It was none of our business, it was the private matter between the poster, the people involved, and the owners of the board. Bringing it up publicly simply has done more damage than good.

You would be absolutely right on this final point. I never should have made in public. All other times, and there were other times, it was not public they were private sitdowns. I tried to go back to the other banning, years ago, and could not even remember how it happened, just why it happened.

You are very wise.

As always thanks for the post.

Bryan please point out the slanderous statements and the rejoinders following.

Inquiring minds want to know.

It has been my experience that when someone makes a statement that they know will be provacative or inadvertently make a statement that is provactive, they act amazed that others react.

You can't just say anything you want and expect that it will be accepted and praised. If you can take the praise, you must be prepared for the criticism. If your only response to the criticism is to call someone the same thing as the back end of a burro, you shouldn't have posted it in the first place. The person this particular situation happened around knew exactly what he was doing.

He has called me non-cursing names before and I ignored him. I've been ignoring him for about 1 1/2 years.

Look back over the threads and follow the history of this whole thing. Look what has happened almost everytime Justine has posted. It will surprise you.

I know what I'm going to get when I post and I decide if I'm in a place to deal with it or not. If I am I do it, if I'm not I don't.

Please highlight the slander. I know I've been accused of it but when I've pointed out the documentation I had, the accusations stopped. Interesting isn't it?

I love the displays of false bravado. Run to the defense of the poor, down-trodden victim. Such injustice! What a violation of rights!

With all the real injustice in the world, I hardly think this compares.

Go ahead and get your dander up, but this a place freely provided for us. There should be no expectation of anything more. It is a wonderful place but I don't feel entitled to anything here.

Methinks someone doth protest too much.
