Yes, the wood chips. At the ends of the slides and all around the swings there is a pit and the mesh is visible.

It seems like many threads on this deck speak of the same worries. Such as qualtiy of life in Lakewood and safety and both those things especially in the context of the "survival" of Lakewood as a great place to live in the future. Why not put together a "quality of life levy" to finance cops, building inspectors and some other things that fall into a "keeping lakewood from turning into euclid"type catagory?

Just in case you or others didn't know, Lakewood does have a Friday Night at the Flicks during the summer. I don't know if they are done for this year as my youngest is driving now, but my wife and I used to take the kids to Lakewood Park for movies like the Lion King or other Disney classics. It was kind of neat as we would see many other families with young kids. If it rained, the movie would get moved to Emerson...Not nearly as nice.
If anyone is interested, you can call city hall at 521-7580 and they can let you know if there are any left for this summer. She may hate me for saying this, but Melissa Garrett always did a great job with these and you can ask for her if the switchboard operator doesn't know.

I happened to check the back of my recent water bill and there will be another Friday Night Flick August 11th. The movie will be Scooby Doo 2 and it is scheduled to begin at dusk. The movie shows on a screen placed in the bandstand.
For you families with young ones; a blanket, a small cooler with some drinks and snacks and you'll have a blast. Don't forget some pre-made popcorn. If you're really feeling nostalgic, make it yourself and put in in a brown paper bag. Then roll up the bag tightly and it will stay warmer than you might think.
Just a couple of suggestions:
If the kids are so young that they may fall asleep, put them in their pajamas ahead of time.
If they're a little older, a frisbee or something soft to toss around helps keep them busy.
If you can get Grandma/Grandpa to come along, get their early, stake out a prime spot and wander over to the playground while the older folks hold down the fort.
If you have friends or neighbors with young kids, invite them along. The more the merrier, plus the extra set of adult eyes never hurts.
If laying on the ground will be uncomfortable, grab a folding chair.
Lastly, HAVE FUN. This truly is a great time and your younger children will love it. Even if they don't say much to you about, the school age kids will be telling all their friends. All this for the cost of ZERO!!!!
