In early May 2008, the City of Toledo saw its first automated garbage truck snatch up a shiny new 96-gallon trash container. Toledo’s Mayor Finkbeiner undoubtedly was chuck full of glee as he addressed reporters telling them automation “"in all probability" eventually would be expanded to nearly citywide and save Toledo $3 million annually.â€

Trolling about lead me to this little nugget. A web site/blog for Toledo folks.
They seem to have plenty to say about:

How complicated their lives have become due to Automated refuse collection.

How filthy and nasty this "service"(sic) has made their city

How police and building inspectors now spend (or shuld be spending) more of their time dealing with garbage everywhere and problems caused by Automation

To quote Yule Brenner, (in the King and I), "etcetera, etcetera, etcetera."

heres the link.. enjoy

PS In Westerlo NY, when the snow is high, people put their garbage cans at the end of the driveway.

The automated trucks could be operated by city employees or trash pickup could be contracted out to a private company.

Ultimately, Toledo City Council will make the final decision.

Councilman Joe McNamara said the proposal would need to include a "massive education campaign" so people could adjust.

"We need to make fundamental changes in the way we are delivering services, and so long as there is enough public education and feedback, it is something worth exploring," Mr. McNamara said.

Councilman Wilma Brown is worried about privatizing trash collection.

"I don't believe in privatization because the people we have now live here in the city and take pride in their work, plus, think about the people we may have to lay off," she said
The city ran a 10,000-home automated pilot program this year. Residents in the program, which was operated in several pockets across Toledo, received two 96-gallon containers - one for trash and the other for recyclables. Trucks equipped with an automated side arm collected garbage from those homes.

A recent survey conducted for the city found the overall approval rating for the program to be 64.3 percent.

The city could spend $20 million for new automated trucks and enough containers for every household.

Councilman George Sarantou, chairman of council's finance committee, said the automated trucks are costly but would save the city money.

Other cost-cutting measures proposed by the Finkbeiner administration include shutting down all nonessential governmental business for three days before the end of 2008 and four days during 2009, eliminating or postponing millions in capital improvement projects, and some layoffs.

Steve,

This is not something that would be good for Lakewood, if ya don’t/cant use it… its just a waste of money.

Wasting our money on automated trucks is kind of like buying an excersise bike or a tread mill... it worked for so and so, doctors say its good for us... but if we do not / can not use it, those automated trucks become nothing more then a waste of money and a metaphoracal cloths rack.

Or am I the only one with a unused tread mill and exercise bike whose sole purpose has become to clutter up my bed room and be used to flop cloths over and stack books on?

I am going to put my faith in the Mayor and City Council on this one.. I think that this plan will work for the city of Lakewood. It is just going to take some time, planning and patience.

First ask your self why this issue is even an issue. Lakewood asked the Auditor to find issue with the refuse department - Auditors opinion- cut department by 2 employees.

Below is one of my exchanges with the Auditor of State:

"Mr. Wilhelm,
I have a further question pertaining to the "City of Lakewood PHASE 1 Performance Audit March 27, 2008".

The report states "The performance audit was designed to assess the selected areas and develop recommendation, where warranted, that identify areas for additional investigation in the SBTFR or practices that would improve the reliability of the budget and financial forecast."

"Who chose the "selected areas" to assess? The City of Lakewood or the Auditor of State?

"Shelley;
The City contracted for Performance to look at selected areas for them.
Take care "( Robert R. Wilhelm, Chief Auditor--Cleveland Region)

"Faith" is something I reserve for pertaining to religion.

It also adds to fuel costs due to the fact that Automated equipment cycles approximately 700 to 1,200 times a day. In comparison, manual loading trucks average a mere 200 cycles per day.

Also, automated trucks tend to operate continuously between stops, causing their hydrolic system to operate at higher temperatures. Because of the high cycle rates, the service life of many of the components are consumed faster.
Has the city made a decision on which model they are going with?

This would depend upon the current age of the fleet.
