This is a terrible thing to happen in our community (or any community).
The wounded woman was transported to Fairview, rather than down the street to Lakewood. Lakewood has a very low incidence of "puncture wounds" (knife, bullet) so the Community Health Needs Assessment doesn't consider this to be much of a need in our community; thus a Level 2 Trauma center at Fairview is considered to be "sufficient." But is it?
His wound was apparently less-serious and he was taken to Trauma 1 Metro. Her wound was (apparently) more serious and she was taken to Trauma 2 Fairview. Both are miles farther than Lakewood Hospital, through narrow streets and lots of intersections.
I know I can not second-guess what the medical result might have been, had this lady been taken to Lakewood and stabilized or treated there.
But I wonder if there is a government agency that reviews such cases to determine whether the additional travel time was detrimental, or whether her wound was so debilitating that the result would have been the same, regardless of which hospital they went to.
It is important to raise these questions in our community at this time.
This is a "practice run" of what life and death will be like in Lakewood, if we lose Lakewood Hospital.

Just so I am clear... a week is the proper amount of time passed for it to be ok to politicize the details of this woman's horrific death at the hands of her son?

First, I want to say that this is a very tragic event and my prayers are with the family.

However, I must say that I agree with the comment that Ms. Harkness made. Most physicians will say that with serious injuries such as the one that this poor lady suffered, the sooner the victim gets to a hospital, the more likely they are to survive. I myself have training in the medical field.

I don't think that Marguerite meant for her post to be political. I think her point was that this lady may have had a higher chance of survival had she gotten to a hospital sooner.

Just my opinion.
