I'm lucky to be spending about 5 weeks in Dresden, Germany, in the former GDR, the part we called "East Germany." A few days ago they celebrated German Unification Day. 24 years of an open economy and unity with what we used to call "West Germany." I'm here courtesy of the Ohio Arts Council, Zygote Press, and the Grafikwerkstatt, which have had an artist exchange for about 18 years. While here, I'm carving wood blocks for a children's book, and working on some other prints.

Meanwhile, I'm taken by how much the government invests to make the city of 530,000 run smoothly . . . particularly on the transportation front. Watch for a story about that ... especially our much discussed walkability and bike-ability . . . in the next Observer.
