New Parking System in DowntowN Lakewood

I parked in Lot B this morning. It was covered by about a half inch of snow.



There are no meters on poles anymore. You pay at a kiosk.



Because of the snow, I couldn't tell if I was actually parked between any lines. I kicked around to see if I could find a space number. I couldn't find mine, but I found a number in a space nearby.



I was wondering how the city might deal with weather conditions that would affect this new parking system. Would they ticket people for not paying when they can't see the lines and numbers?



Fortunately, these guys think of everything.

I'm sure that the folks at City Hall still get tingles up their legs talking about the $150,000 grant (which comes from tax dollars) to pay for the $400,000 project (which comes from tax dollars).







I'm also guessing that the residents who can't figure out how to use the new system also don't get tweets or posts from City Hall to even know that this "how to video" exists.

And how much did this "how to video" cost the residents?

Whatever the amount, I'm sure Colin was paid from City Hall's "electronic wallet."

Like it or not, this is the industry standard.
I've seen these systems all around the country.

I really don't have a complaint about the parking system. I use similar systems in my travels, and they work most of the time. The ones that I visit usually have space numbers on small raised signs that don't get covered by snow.

I prefer the uncluttered aesthetic of the numbers painted on the pavement, like Lot B, but the city will have to be sensitive to parkers in snowy weather. The "Parking Enforcement Team" should make a more permanent "Parking NOT Enforced at this time" sign, and keep it handy for system maintenance, malfunctions, and snow.

I must admit, though, that I had to make a quick stop in DowntowN last night (Parked in the lot behind Cerny Shoes.), and was happy that there was a convenient meter right in front of my car.

I understand that there are ongoing discussions about caring for the lot better so this problem will not be a regular one. Extreme weather will always be a challenge.
