Geminids - where?

Post by Jeff Dreger »

Anyone have suggestions for a good, dark place to watch the meteor shower tomorrow night? I know we're relatively urban but I don't want to go too far. Probably going to try for 8-9ish Thursday night. Is Lakewood Park too lit up?

I would suggest Kauffman Park but that would be considered illegal

Here's a "tip of the hat" to Nadhal.

The best night for this is tonight! It's pretty clear. I looked this up and if I got it right, the Geminids are in the Gemini constellation. You can find it by finding the knife hanging from the constellation Orion's belt and going down from there. It's South.

I think we're going to head west along Lake and find a dark beach.

ps I will post pictures if I can get them on the I-phone. What are the odds?

I hope someone else does. (Besides NASA, though I'm sure theirs will be lovely.)

They were so bright that I saw two of them in our driveway. Super clear night and even the light pollution didn't stop them from being seen.

Then it was too cold and went inside.

Ended up going to Tyler Field in the Rocky River Reservation - darker and more open view. Saw quite a few and some of them were certainly bright enough to be seen almost anywhere. Some blankets and hot chocolate made for a neat experience for the family.

I haven't been here and it's an hour away but this sounds like it might be the best place in the area if you're serious about finding a good star gazing spot:

The show might not be at peak tonight but should still be good.
