Garfield school to be used for overnight shelter

Post by Betsy Voinovich »

Just heard this news. Looks like we're getting ready for
a long haul with the power being out.

I think you're right Betsy. Over the years, First Energy has cut crews and deferred maintenance. We've been ripe for this for some time.

Good question. Lemme ask. By the way, FOUR schools in the district are still without power."

Hi Robert,

According to Board of Ed Member, Ed Favre, we still have Emerson, Grant, Hayes and Harding without power, and Garfield is in active use as a shelter. Though Superintendent Patterson will make the call, and he is hoping as many of us are that the power will be on soon, it is unlikely that we will have school tomorrow. The District won't start up classes in half of the buildings, they will wait til the District has power for all of the buildings.

I know many of us are making decisions right now to go stay with Grandma, or to get a hotel. It seems a safe bet for tonight that there will be no school tomorrow. I would love it if the power was back on by Friday but according to other posts on here (look at Jim's "get used to it" post) I doubt we will be in school on Friday.

Time to do some more grilling in the garage. Jumping Jacks before bed are good too.

Stay safe.

Thank you Betsy,

For us Grandma is a 3 hour car drive.

But, if the school district would just close for the week (why show up for one day (Friday)), the family would be gone in a heartbeat.

More living in the library, cooking on the camp stove and sleeping in sleeping bags.

Hi Robert,

I know what you're saying. First Energy is promising the city of Lakewood to try to have the power on by the weekend. It seems likely that the schools won't all be up and running by tomorrow-- also with power lines still down, trees still down, etc, it seems unlikely that the walks to school will be safe.

What's getting everybody down (those of us, and there are many, that don't have power) is not that we can't deal with this, but that no-one knows how long it will be. I know a lot of parents who have already made the decision on their own and have left to stay with relatives or friends. If this counts as an absence in school, so be it.

I'll check in with school people if I can find them and see what they're thinking and post again. I'm sure they realize how we must be feeling, but maybe not. I don't know if they realize that they're kind of forcing families to stay in freezing houses.

As it stands right now, they will have a massive amount of absences tomorrow if school is open.
