Wild times at Lake Erie Screw Factory

Post by Betsy Voinovich »

The one night only, "All That Matters To Me" show described as "artists taking over the Lake Erie Templar building, testing the limits of what art can be..." made for an interesting evening. The show featured video, sculpture, performance, painting, installation, printmaking and photography. We had no way to know what we would see next as we wandered down the dark hallways.

Before the artist entered the scene, this piece seemed to be an almost life-sized pink elephant made of clouds, as pink elephants should be. When its creator entered the scene, kissing the pink elephant, seemingly floating in the air to do so, we got the full effect. It looks exactly like an elephant from the other side. A friendly one.

Mrs. Haversham! It's Mrs. Haversham's cake! My friend last night figured out the book, but I couldn't remember the name. Coffee makes the difference.

Made of wedding cake, old fabric, tinsel, ribbons, and human hair, this was one of the creepier and more evocative pieces of the evening. It made you sad but you couldn't keep your eyes off of it.

Yeah, that's a real guy in there, watching a real TV. I should have taken video because what doesn't make it through in this picture is how miserable the guy seemed to be. The smell of wet plaster reeked from the edges of the white picket fence, and the guy projected misery, boredom, and completely entrapment, to the point that you wanted to get away from him. Perfect job of using every medium at his disposal.

It was great to see the range of talent, and experience the enthusiasm and craziness in the room. I never heard of this before, but if they do it again next year I'll be there.

Happy Sunday.

It's not "Mrs. Haversham," it's "Miss Havisham."

Here's another picture of the dude.
