Election Results - But Wait There's More
AS many as 2,600+ votes remain uncounted as of right now.
These are 400+ provisional ballots, and over 2,000 late mail in ballots.
I know of one asking for a recount, but of course there is a ten day period where the
Board of Election will look, and do a machine recount, and add in those ballots.

Re: Election Results - But Wait There's More
I stayed up last night refreshing the BOE election result ticker and Pagsuyoin was always ahead of Barcelona. Then when the last update with all precincts counted appeared, Barcelona was ahead.
Regardless, the vote is so close that I believe there is a mandatory recount.

Hi Grace,
Yeah, that was weird. All of the other wards were reporting throughout the night except Ward One, which was completely uncounted until the last minute. I wonder how David Anderson and Pat Metzger felt about that, hour after hour. At our open-mike party at the Winchester (Stan Austin is a wonderful singer) we had a good time figuring out who lived in that ward and speculating over the many possible outcomes.

It sounds like one is already underway. When Ward One suddenly reported all of its votes near midnight, Kristine Pagsuyoin had 72 votes less than the the third place School Board candidate. By the end of last night, it was 70. That's very close, especially with that many votes uncounted.
There's more indeed! Big fun, as always, in Lakewood.

Grace- I believe the threshold is a margin of 1% or less to prompt the automatic recount you mentioned. The current split between Petrie-Barcelona and Pagsuyoin is 0.29%.
These municipal elections always serve as an excellent reminder to me that every vote counts. One person (or in this case right now, 72 people) really does make a difference. A true demonstration of the democratic process at its finest.

Grace
I have been involved in delivering votes to election headquarters on election night. It was
taken 1 Ward from River to the headquarters. I was a cab driver at the time.
I left Rocky River at 7:15pm, got down there and spent 2+ hours in line waiting to drop
them off. I think I finally left at midnight.
I have no idea how it works with chips, but lets say they come in, and are being counted
and another 400 chips are dropped on top of them?
As we all know, I am a conspiracy freak, but I also try to be a realist. TRY
But I am not sure it is all that odd.
Also I was involved in a recount. The vote was separated by 47 votes. At the end of
two days of counting ala Florida. Pro found one vote, Against found one vote.
I am just saying, we want all votes counted, but we are talking of a 140 vote swing,
which could come down to knocking on doors, get your mail vote back, or people
making Xs instead of filling in the oval.
I was talking with someone today that pointed out it could come down to a paperclip. In
the last literature drop, Emma, Tom, and Linda's pieces were paper clipped together. Of
course, if Emma's was on the bottom, and they threw it away... Or...
It will be interesting.

Re: Election Results - But Wait There's More
The main reason that Ward 1 comes in last is because it has the highest voter turnout, thus taking longer to close out, etc.
I find it funny that the candidates are hesitant to cast their loyalty of running as a ticket when in a public forum but will do it opening in every other back alley way. The upside for Kristine is that the trend for late votes and provisionsal ballots come from the other wards.
This will, in fact, go down as "The Year of the Paperclip"

I believe this is known as "Lakewood Style."

Yes, Kristine Pagsuyoin was about 150 to 200 votes ahead until the latest update last night (presumably when Ward 1 came in all at once), and then Petrie-Barcelona was ahead of Pagsuyoin by 72.
This AM (as Betsy says) it was changed to only 70 ahead for Petrie-Barcelona. Pretty undecided, given the percentage margin (0.29% per Margaret) and the uncounted ballots (over 2,400 per Jim).

Re: Election Results - But Wait There's More
This was the first time I ever received an email like this:
"Dear Friends:
My good friend Tom Einhouse is running for Lakewood School Board tomorrow ….
I have known Tom for a long time and have worked with him in Cub Scouts. I know Tom as a standup guy and kid friendly.
Tom is an Ideal candidate as his campaign literature will demonstrate……
I have given Tom my support by being his campaign treasurer.
Please take a minute to read the attached literature and consider Tom when you are voting tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Don"
I was particularly impressed with the punctuation in the email. Sadly, the literature that was referenced was not attached.
Of course, I later found that the one email address associated with the missive belonged to Jeff Endress.

Mike,
Over votes are ballots that had more than 3 (the max you could vote for in this race) names checked and undervotes are ballots that had less than 3. Undervotes are typically what a candidate wants to see if they are not on a "ticket". Punch one or two and don't risk voting for someone that could beat your 1 or 2 favorites. Overvotes are generally mistakes.

So Under was the clear winner? Sort of a none of the above vote.

Just strategic voting, I think.
Each voter gets 3 votes but if you strongly support one of those candidates if you use your other 2 votes are are voting against your own candidate.
Just out of curiousity what were you looking for in a candidate?

Re: Election Results - But Wait There's More
My primary concern would be that the candidate recognize that our current education cabal (and I certainly don't limit this to Lakewood) is profoundly inefficient and is not remaining competitive in the marketplace, and would be very proactive in seeking new ways (or retaining old ways) to produce more capable graduates, preferably without increasing costs.
I'm glad that the Lakewood schools are highly rated. But I'm also aware that they are among the best of a very sorry lot.
In my opinion, things like having two or three or four kids in the system is not a qualification for serving on the board. Willingness to demand basic changes in education to me is far more important.
I'm also not anti-teacher; they are doing the best they can, but their training has given them outmoded skills, and they are naturally reluctant to change their modus operandi, but I feel that such changes are essential if we are to remain a viable society. So I would support a candidate who was capable of demanding such changes. But I don't think that has to be done in a confrontational way. I view the unions as being an impediment, as they seem to fight to preserve outmoded methods and policies, but I think a good negotiator could make them see that some changes would benefit both the schools and their members.
I would also like a candidate who was willing to make unpopular decisions when they are right. A board member who just polls his constituents and then agrees with them is not doing the job; the unpleasant fact is that most of us have incomplete or erroneous information, or lack the ability to process the information we have, so we draw conclusions that are often inaccurate, and a board member who simply parrots our uninformed conclusions is not doing going to give us good schools.
Also, I would want a candidate who had no political aspirations. The school board should be their ultimate and only objective; a candidate who is advanced by a party to gain exposure and credentials for another office will never get my vote.
