Channel 5 blows it on Lakewood story

Post by Vince Frantz »

OK - so many of you know that folks have been trying to address the city wide tagging.

LakewoodAlive, store owners, LHS, skaters - etc.

So I get a call from my in-laws in North Royalton that they were sad to see the Lakewood skatepark getting overrun by graffiti. They saw in the news that it was covered and that they finally caught the people?

What?

Turns out the Channel 5 WEWS website posted a fake photo with their coverage of the recent graffiti arrests in Lakewood. It is of a wooden ramp somewhere with tags on it. This is what they showed along with the article about the arrests.

In case they removed the photo - i am showing it here.

Vince,

Did you email channel 5 and ask that the photo's location be identified? I did. Maybe if they receive enough requests for this and statements that photos' origin should be labelled they will do so, despite some damage being done. This kind of stuff makes me crazy.

A subject dear too my heart. No, not tagging.

It is deliberate disinformation about Lakewood in the broadcast and print media. This isn't the first such instance. There have been many more.

The classic was the story the Plain Dealer printed about an article in a national magazine. The magazine reported on the the great quality of Lakewood homes and neighborhoods. The magazine included lovely pictures of homes in various Lakewood neighborhoods. The picture the PD put in the paper to accompmany THEIR article was a graffit covered Cleveland bungalow.

In the mean time they publish fraudulant puff pieces about other cities:

PS: The Lakewood skate park is graffiti free and from what I see, trouble free.

I did not email them yet. It is time we made a story out of their skewed coverage. We can't change the perceptions of all the folks that read that story (or only saw the photo they posted.)

But we can do a bit of our own coverage and expose what Bill has also identified as hacky journalism that borders on anti-lakewood.

So please - don't bother emailing the writer. Your tweet and facebook post will be more constructive than an email that simply lets them swap it and leave all the previous perceptions to linger.

The article is a rip-off of the Sun article by Kate Spirgen. The photo is probably found by google image search for tagging.

Oops - looks like they already swapped it. No email needed.

Anyone who believes what they see on the news or in the PD has serious issues.

They all have their own political agendas. Big business, advertising dollars.

Hi,

I just checked my email and received the following from TV 5:

Hi Christina,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have swapped out the image to a generic police graphic.
