The fact of the matter is our commercial sign ordinance is part of the building code. The Building Dept. doesn't regulate legally licensed and parked vehicles on public streets.

There is nothing stopping any Lakewood business from utilizing this same technique of using their vehicle as a rolling billboard, gee you already know that. It's probably one of the oldest forms of advertising.

Bill

Wrong. This statute is 541.08, which is part of the Codified Ordinences under "Property Offenses" Other offenses are Arson, Criminal Mischief and Criminal Tresspass, which also aren't regulated by the Building Department.

541.08 BILLPOSTING.
Only address NON-COMMERCIAL signs and that IS commercial signs (signs from businesses) are regulated by the building code and building department.

541.08 BILLPOSTING.
Regulates you (an individual) putting up a sign in the city right-of-way, looking for Fluffy or advertising your garage sale.

Temporary sign permits to business' are issued and policed by the Building Commissioner. The most frequent use of temporary sign permits is when a business has not yet had it permanent sign reviewed and approved by the sign review board. As far as I know there are not any laws regulating advertising on a vehicle in Lakewood.

I will agree that these vehicles are being used impart as signs (to market a service/product) The same as so many the Fedex trucks, Red Bull minis or even Mr. O'Bryan's wife's car.
But we don't have a law recognizing them as signs or regulating them.

We already have laws prohibiting for more than 24hrs. All you need to do is call the police and they begin a 24hr. check. I've used this process several times to rid my neighborhood of violators.

Thanks for the note.

For the record, with the single exception of the Highland Ave. sign to be reinstalled. I
cannot think of a single other thing I have ever asked for from a public official, and
I would certainly never asked to be treated any differently.

However to punish Lakewood businesses for doing business legally, just seems
counter productive.

Bill, why are you so for this practice again?

.

"public official"?
24hr. checks are really easy, you call the Police dispatcher using the non-emergency number, give them an address and description, they send an officer out to start a check, they run the plate and if it happens to be close by (on the block) they try to notify them and if it isn't moved in 24hrs. + they ticket and tow it. That's how it works. It's complaint driven.

You see I take a proactive approach, I don't wait for some else to do it and I don't go on the local blogs and whine about it.

I am not for or against "this practice". 1) I don't see the difference between these cars an so many with advertising on them (your wife's included) which we don't regulate. 2) I don't agree that we should or can regulate residents/ Lakewood business' (taxpayers) and visitors/non-Lakewood business as two separate classes. Even if we had an laws regulating vehicles with advertising on them.

I'm looking at the larger picture, I'm sure this offensive adverting campaign by one business will run it's course shortly. Complaints directly to the advertiser, it president, board members and investors might hurry it along.

The long, baby blue Continental looking car is parked in Marc's plaza...right in front of Boston Market. Curious to see if it will be there tomorrow.

Still pretty nasty, though it would seem to have a different meaning on a $300,000 Ferrari.
