Decency

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

"Decency, it is what our grand mothers taught us."

Certainly something I have no moral high ground on, nor claim to. But as I look at the
city of Lakewood, I see many, many groups that have fallen into the "my way or the
highway" mode of thinking. Many, if not most of these people are good people that have
lost sight because they KNOW what to do, and must win at all costs. After all, in the
end absolute power corrupts absolutely. This need has once again filled many, many,
many areas of life here in Lakewood.

That always takes me back to the Tom Wolfe book, "The Bonfire of the Vanities." A story
of many public groups that have lost sight of the fact they are here to serve the community
not just their very small group. At the end of the movie version Morgan Freeman, as the judge
delivers one of those speeches I think of often, nearly every day.

I share it with all now.

Read the book, or rent the movie
