Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear had to feel sorry for the old lion on his last outing and wish that he could be taken somewhere soothing and restful before the night was out.
One of my favorite quotes. He makes an interesting point about his long term struggle with viewing candidates on issues only vs. bringing in their personalities. But it seems that he has decided that since candidate's opinions, beliefs and stances on issues change like the wind the only constant in all of this is who they are and how they portray themselves. Based on this, he deconstructs his reasoning that McCain is clearly wrong for the highest office in the land.
But oddly enough, he holds character to be so high but also goes on how much he hated Clinton in the 90's due to his character. Yet, character flaws aside I doubt there is a person alive then and now who can say we are better off now than we were 10 years ago. We were more prosperous as a nation and weren't at war. So maybe Hitchens is full of it when it comes to character since clearly maybe we needed a lyin', cheatin', philanderer in the White House vs. a more noble, self-righteous and honest man as it seemed to work out for everyone.
Hell, Clinton revitalized the Republican party, too. He was so hated by the Right that he became the springboard for the Republican Revolution that lasted a good 10 years until people stopped believing in it.
Still, Hitchens brings up interesting reasons to consider a candidate, slippery stances on issues aside.
"Possible explanations for why other people might not share our views:
They haven't been told the truth.
They are too lazy or stupid to reach correct...conclusions, or
They are biased by their self-interest, dogma, or ideology."
