Yes. they're fueled by men who teach hatred and intolerance as a means to enhance their own position. They use Religion to suit their own agenda not to promote a system of faith.

Certainly religion is, and has been for millennia, a means of population control.

However, the exclusivity and intolerance inherent in many religions cannot be overlooked, or blamed fully on manipulative leaders. Religions are built from the ground up for this sort of control -- it's not as if they "fall into the wrong hands" and sometimes get used for ill.

Stephen, I think it's more a function of what Bret is saying - indoctrination from the top down. So I suppose it's the result of culture insofar as culture includes religion.

This is always a touchy subject, and I don't mean to offend anyone. Personally, I draw a distinction between "spirituality" as an individual experience and "religion" as an institution. The former can be a wonderful thing if it brings out the best in someone, but the latter's power of group mind control frightens me at times.

I just want to live in a world where people do not legislate their beliefs into my life.. If I do not want to wear my seat belt then so be it... If I want to smoke a big Bob Marley joint then so be it... If my gay friend wants to marry his lover then so be it... We are being legislated into submission.. Why do I have to drive to West Virginia to legally gamble? I cannot smoke in a bar.. Why? If you do not want to inhale second hand smoke then do not work or go to a bar where smoking is allowed.. How about my choice to smoke?? (beside outside in the freezing cold)

Agreed on most points. While I understand the public health issues involved in something like the smoking ban, it really burns me up to have morals legislated on me, like gay marriage, gambling, and blue laws. Why can't I buy liquor at 10 AM on a Sunday? Why does an establishment, which already possesses a liquor license, have to pay again, for another, separate liquor license to be able to sell on Sundays?

At least I can name my Teddy Bear whatever I want without fear of reprisal. :roll:
