sad
That is very sad. The technology is so ubiquitous, nearly everyone who owns it rips or downloads music in a way which violates copyright laws. As a matter of fact, that is a high marketing point of the technology. These record companies should be suing the hardware makers, or even Microsoft.
It used to be a lot more labor intensive to violate copyright laws. So fewer people did it. Back in the early 90s I had to press the "record" button on my cassette deck stereo to get the King Biscuit Flour Hour concerts on tape. after it was over I had to press the "stop" button on the cassette deck stereo.

After news broke about the Bit Torrent site The Pirate Bay being raided, breaking Swedish law in the process, TPB (and affiliated political party Piratpartiet) have filed charges against several movie studios:

A hacker recently went public about his involvement with MediaDefender, a RIAA/MPAA watchdog. The evidence (700MB worth of emails) was pretty damning.
As brokep (one of the founders of TPB) said, the internet is a hydra - you might shut one site down, but others will appear in its wake. Take OiNK for instance - the site was recently shut down and the admins were arrested. Days later, TPB assumed control of the domain names and the database.
Steal This Film is a pretty good documentary about TPB, made shortly after their raid last year.
I've been following the developments pretty closely. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
