Today came the news of veteran Actor and part time Lakewood resident Hall Holbrook.
Yes that is right, Mr. Holbrook spent a lot of time in and around Lakewood.
From a post today from longtime Lakewood resident, author, renaissance man, and Lakewood Observer contributor Matthew Weiland.
Rookie Card | The first writing assignment I ever received came from Brother Joseph Chvala for St. Edward's Flight Magazine around this time of year in 1982: Go down to E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron and try and score an interview with Hal Holbrook following his performance of Mark Twain Tonight.
So my dad and I and longtime family friend and photographer, Kim Ketterer
(who took the photo of him in full make-up) ventured out on a cold, snowy Sunday evening and after the show made our way to the green room and waited. - I'd seen him as the Stage Manager on an NBC version of Our Town and as Deep Throat in All the President's Men, but knew little else of him, as the googol was still merely an unfathomable number.
Before sending me off, though, Brother Joe suggested, "He grew up for a time in Lakewood, so you might make sure you mention you’re from 'Lakewood' St. Edward."
It worked. Mr. Holbrook did a little double-take when I introduced myself as he walked by and said, "I grew up in Lakewood." He then stood with us and chatted for some fifteen minutes or so as my voice quavered through ten questions scribbled in a notebook and I scratched out notes (a notebook still in a drawer somewhere here). He was generous and gracious and throughout my life I came to appreciate the full range of his gifts, his craft, his manner. - Some kind of actor. And for young me, some special guy.
Happy Trails, Lakewood Neighbor. Thanks for taking the time and for making me feel welcome. - (Say hey to Dixie for us.)
