Last Minute Gift Ideas For Friends, Family, Co-Workers, and Neighbors

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

As Christmas and the holiday season come crashing down on all of us, while some have shopped all year long for the season, many more wait until the last minute. It does not matter which camp you fall into, here are some great last minutes ideas for places to shop, and gifts to buy with a slant on shopping and keeping it local.

Image
Rozi’s gift baskets, and gift cards: long-time downtown Lakewood anchor, owned and operated by a four generation Lakewood family, Rozi’s has become the go-to place nationwide for corporate presents and last-second gifts for friends and family. It doesn't matter if you are Microsoft buying hundreds of gift baskets, or Joe from down the street looking for that perfect bottle of wine or beer sampler to take to a party, the gang at Rozi’s can help you out.

Image
Lakewood’s Holiday Pop-Up Boutique, featured on the front page of this issue of the Lakewood Observer has great gifts in all price ranges most from local artists, businesses, and groups. Next to Deagan’s and one storefront from Rozi’s, it makes for a great stop when Downtown Shopping.

Root Cafe, featuring not just coffee, and gift cards but December 16th and 17th, scarves, hats, socks and more from Annadele Alpacas. If you have not felt how warm and soft Alpaca items are, you should stop by and check out the amazing colorful work from these artisans.

Image
Book by locals, featured in this edition of the Lakewood Observer: “Tunnel to Hell” by Lakewood native Scott MacGregor and legendary illustrator Gary Dumm. It took years to marry Gary’s images to Scott’s story, but together they take an off beat interesting part of Cleveland history and make it a book that appeals to a wide range of people from historians to graphic novel collectors. Gary Dumm was the illustrator for Harvey Pekar’s underground comic books, and this is easily his biggest project ever. Scott makes the story of the 5-Mile Crib, the red thing out in the lake, fun and fascinating.

John Greiner’s “Sandwich Anarchy” is an impressive collection of John’s art done for Lakewood's legendary sandwich shop, Melt. John’s unique style has been used by Melt for all of their ads, posters and ever growing list of stores. John, a Lakewood High graduate, has become one of the hottest artists in the Cleveland area, and one look at this beautiful book explains why. He does it all from dark to cheerful. The book is a must have for anyone who enjoys Melt, or graphic coffee table books.

Scott MacGregor also sells amazing photos of Ireland like the one above through his online store, http://www.irishphotos.com. Original signed prints of Ireland can be purchased online for your favorite Irish friend or relative. It can also be appreciated on  Facebook at: “Ireland Photography By Scott MacGregor.”

The go-to Christmas and holiday shop, Hixson’s! With thousands and thousands of gift ideas ranging from $1 to $1,000 or more, all with collectable, heirloom, and holiday flavors make the store a must stop and must see. Bill Hixson, owner of the store, has been chosen to decorate White House Christmas trees for over 35 years. Each year he designs and creates new Christmas ornaments to add to your tree, or a friend’s tree. The state’s largest collection of Christmas decorations and ornaments. It is also like a walk back into time as he has many items from Halle’s, Sterling Linder, May Company, Higbees and other places that anyone over 40 should remember and want to see again.

Finally there are gift certificates to any one of hundreds of Lakewood restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops to get gift certificates from. And at Woodstock, you can also find one of the hottest gift items this year. “Foodwood©” T-shirts featuring both Woodstock Smoke Joint on the front, and the Foodwood logo on the back, or the Lakewood logo on the front and Foodwood on the back. Foodwood is a new promotion coming to Lakewood in 2018. As we went to press, Lakewood/Foodwood Shirts were sold out, but will be restocked by Tuesday at Rozi’s and Woodstock. Certainly the hottest gift item of the year!

That is my short list, add your ideas below.

Have a safe and fun holiday season.

Watch out for those less fortunate, and make sure pets stay warm.

Peace/love

great post Jim, thanks for sharing. A couple years ago, I thought I'd visit locale antique and resale shops for my holiday gifts. I found so many wonderful little cleaver items, from beautiful old music boxes, a small accent lamp for a shelf, or night lite, unique objects of art to delight the eye, most under $10.00, one of a kind. Course, this depends on who your buying for.

Imagine a leaded or stained glass window, simply place inside on any window, cozy, quaint, a lifetime of giving, gifts like these don't disappear, they last forever. How cool to send your friend a ""Lakewood Ohio" T shirt, and they live in Denver.

So many places to shop locally but three that have been a hit for me gift-wise are Lion and Blue, Sweet Designs, and Stem.

The Ranger Shop will have a popup shop at Lakewood High School this Saturday from 10am to 3pm.
You can stop by and pick up a gift for the LHS fan on your list....the friendly staff has a wide assortment of Purple and Gold goodies.

I always like to promote The Bookshop in Lakewood.

In addition to the wonderful selection of books, everyone should know about the growing collection of Lakewood-made soft toys in the store. I only have a photo of this one, but there are all kinds of adorable creatures.

Now Jackie Curious Observers would want to know-- which Ranger fashion items would attract your attention?
For me, it would be an LHS wrestling T shirt
