Coyote Was A Fox Caught In City Snare

This morning I wrongfully identified an animal caught in a snare as a Coyote, which the city has set traps and snares for along the lake.

The terrible news instead of a coyote it was one of our foxes, that do not attack dogs.

Story was moved, and is being corrected here.

I know hunters like to post pictures of animals they innocently slaughtered when out hunting (i.e. just sitting and waiting for an animal to walk by to kill - that's 'hunting'), but to proudly post multiple pictures of a traumatized fox hung up in an inhumane snare?! Seriously? Did you see the look in the eyes of that poor animal.

That deleted post was in really really bad taste. I hope you don't re-post those images.
Ridiculous.

If people want to control the coyote problem, quit putting food out for them (leaving small dogs out unsupervised and leaving cats out to roam around). I don't even let my medium sized Golden Retrievers out alone.
Let the coyotes help control the deer problem and the rat problem along the lake.

Again, please accept my apology for the story on the "coyote" I corrected and moved it. With many complaints, and the correct identification of the animal the story became heart breaking.

Coyotes have been seen roaming in packs along the Lake, especially north of Clifton Blvd., and have been responsible for numerous attacks on dogs, and cats, actually killing a couple of them. In an effort to curb these attacks which are getting more and more frequent the City along with the help of the animal warden have placed traps and snares along the lake, on what has been deemed city property, or public property.

Today was one of those unfortunate accidents where the wrong animal falls into the trap.

Brian was leaving for court as the animal warden arrived, so the outcome of the animal is in the hand of the city's animal warden.

They were not proudly posted. They were posted, and you are right it was wrong and I apologized for the post.

Images and stories were not deleted, but moved, and hidden. Yes on FB too, with a corrected story apology issued.

The images will not resurface on the Observer or by us.

From what I am learning the City of Lakewood contracts with an outside firm to place the snares and traps.

Brian had to leave to go to court, as police and animal warden arrived. They told him they were waiting for the company contracted.

Mr. Ott,

Do you consider the cows, pigs, chickens etc. raised in captivity for slaughter more humane that a wild animal living free and harvested for food?

If a deer is run down in nature by a coyote a more humane "kill" in your mind?

BTW over the years, the ODNR has increased the number of deer that hunters can harvest in order to control the impact deer have on agriculture and traffic fatalities. Does that mean that the State of Ohio is inhumane?

And most of the deer harvested in Ohio are donated to feed the poor. And much of the money that comes from hunting fees goes into conservation efforts by the state.

The City of Lakewood put the snare out, not me or JOB.
