New music-themed gallery exhibit opens Friday at Beck Center for the Arts

Post by Matthew Charboneau »

We have a one of a kind exhibition coming up at Beck Center!

On Friday, January 13th we will celebrate the opening of Playing the Changes: The Life and Legacy of Milt Hinton. This exhibition is a collaboration between Beck Center, Oberlin College, and the Milton J. Hinton Photographic Collection in NYC.

Hinton was a famous jazz bassist active from the 1920s to the 1990s, who played with a "who's who" of legendary jazz artists. He was also an amateur photographer who always had his black and white German camera handy, and captured more than 60,000 images in his lifetime. The gallery installation will celebrate his life in his own photos, and with biographical imagery created by curators from Oberlin College.

To celebrate, on Friday, January 13th we will present a documentary film about Milt Hinton at 6:00pm. The NYC-based filmmakers will be there for a Q&A session right after the film. Admission is free of charge, but reservations are required (call 216.521.2540 ext 10).

Then that same evening at 7:30pm, we will hold a public gallery reception in our lounge at Beck Center. The reception is free of charge, catered by Salt restaurant, and with a cash bar.

Please visit our web site or call 216.521.2540 ext 37 for more information!

I believe I saw an exhibit of some of these photos at the Allen Museum in Oberlin, once?

If so, it's very impressive material. This event sounds excellent.

The Allen Museum is a hidden gem in NE Ohio!

Wow-- now this is intriguing! A visit to the exhibit then across the street to the Rush or West End?

Thank you all for your interest!

There was definitely an exhibition out at Oberlin, I know I saw some prints in the Conservatory Lobby. This exhibition at Beck Center will feature almost 40 prints specifically for this show, and some really nice bio banners telling Milt's story.

Of note is the film screening on JAN 13 at 6pm, then reception at 7:30pm

FEB 4 we will have another special event featuring a curatorial lecture, and a music performance played on one of Milt Hinton's actual basses.

Please come see us for the events described above, or just pop in to see the gallery exhibit, which will be on display from JAN 13 through FEB 18
