City Tells Surgical Development Partners "We Don't Need or Want A Hospital In Lakewood"

Post by Brian Essi »

Attached are emails between Butler and SDP where the Tennessee Hospital Builder and Operator wrote the following:

We are currently working with at least 90 local independent physicians related to a potential hospital project in Lakewood. We would expect that the project would be structured in a similar manner to our other projects where the affiliated physicians would have meaningful input into the day-to-day activities of the hospital.

We would expect to provide inpatient and outpatient care. Our preliminary impression is that we would want to start with 60 to 100 inpatient beds and preserve the licensing on the remainder. Our focus would be on the healthcare needs of the community, as seen by our affiliated physicians. On a preliminary basis we believe that programs for wellness, chronic disease and appropriate ED services would be included.

General Acute Care Hospital services, [would be offered] based on the new Budget Bill that was enacted November 2, 2015 it is imperative to retain Hospital status on the site to allow for HOPD status for any outpatient or medical office activities on the site.

Butler responded: we have moved well beyond most of the issues you outline

It is clear from Butler that our City leaders don't want or need a hospital in Lakewood.

Yet they have no plan of their own for the gutted hospital that can no longer be a hospital or healthcare facility due to a FREE non compete they are dying to give to CCF.

Brian,

Thanks for posting this. I have a few thoughts/opinions:

It is my understanding that privately-owned businesses can sell to whomever they want. On the other hand, with public-owned assets, I was under the understanding that there had to be opening bidding. Why has mayor, council, and LHA been ignoring or claiming they have not received other offers? They are now trying to shut out SDP. This does not appear to add up to what I believe the law to be.

Is Judge O'Donnell aware of the other offers besides CCF that the city has ignored or turned their back on? It seems odd that the powers that be now have another six weeks to decant the hospital.

Can we ask for some kind of legal emergency intervention?

I am trying to stay positive with Judge O'Donnell, but I am now skeptical since another six weeks are apparently being allowed for hospital decanting.
